Darcy is the one who left the band and turned her back on her fans, it's evident she will be replaced for it. In all fairness, Corgan is just following tradition, it's always been a female bassist.

Honestly, it's kind of disrespectful to D'Arcy. It's like he's saying "oh, we'll just keep finding more female bassists." She wasn't the best bassist in the world, a far cry from it and quite sloppy, but she's the original bassist and he doesn't seem to want to respect that.

I really seem to be hating every little thing this man does these days. I wish he'd just stop making music under the Smashing Pumpkins name. It's so awful. He ruined his band.

somehow if it was a guy you'd still fucking complain. gets really boring after a while...

Actually I was really pissed when they ditched Eric Avery because he couldn't "keep up" or some bullshit like that. Yeah, maybe he was unable to "keep up" with Billy's image for the band so he can get away with dressing up like he's from Spinal Tap or as a queer sun god who went to Goodwill. If you've ever listened to Jane's Addiction you'd know Avery can handle D'Arcy's bass lines and then some.

Don't forget about Jeff Schroeder. I'll admit, he's a great guitarist (perhaps better than James) -- but, wow. Thin, asian, quiet and odd yet humorous when it counts, religious - just like James.

brendo: That's Zwan. But still, you raise a good point. Billy could form some kind of music entourage with a symphony and no drummer, but he'd still pay some chick to stand there with a bass guitar playing the same chord for two hours.

We've had white (D'Arcy), REALLY white (Melissa), latino... give Billy a couple years, maybe he'll go for a black bassist or a girl from the middle east!

Totally unsurprising that he picked another female. I don't see it as any slight towards D'arcy or some transparent image thing though. I think it's closer to a kind of superstition on Billy's part that he needs some female input into his music. And really, it's not like there are a ton of female drummers and guitar players out there who could come in and play up to SP standard, so bass is the one place he can go for that.

I'm actually most excited by the way the myspace message made it seem like her main duties thus far have been in the studio, and that being the touring bassist is kind of an afterthought right now. I think that bodes better for future Teargarden tracks.

Also, the pressure is on Mike Byrne even more now, because everyone else in the band looks to have the proven chops and experience needed to do some amazing stuff (Gossamer, for instance) if they wanted to. Right now he's the only real question mark.

can't think of a drummer up to JC's level either male of female as far as what works for this band is concerned, but there are tons of females who can play circles around jeff and iha. you take the time to look them up.. but two off the top of my head, kaki king is more creative inventive as far as harmonic conception and technical execution of rhythm guitar is concerned.. that blonde chick Orianthi that was going to play in michael jacksons band can shred the fuck out of a lead solo..

but that's not the point. who's to say a female couldn't play up to chamberlins or iha/schroders standards?

+ we don't know who is out there in obscure land that is playing. via my own musical experiences i've met a good handful of excellent female guitarists, and even a couple drummers.
