anyone hear about that new book about SUVs?
i heard them interview this guy, keith bradsher, on npr awhile back. he wrote a book called High and Mighty: SUVs--The World's Most Dangerous Vehicles and How They Got That Way he basically went around talking to people who actually work for auto companies, and apparently some company or other does research on their consumers etc etc etc, and they basically try to market their suvs according to uhh the character results of these surveys, i don't get it but here's a quote that's sort of funny
"Who has been buying SUVs since automakers turned them into family vehicles? They tend to be people who are insecure and vain. They are frequently nervous about their marriages and uncomfortable about parenthood. They often lack confidence in their driving skills. Above all, they are apt to be self-centered and self-absorbed, with little interest in the neighbors or communities." uhh here's a link to more info about the book. i could go into detail but it was awhile ago and i forget what he said i just think it's so uncanny like...how do these researchers now all this stuff? like is it a subtle test or what? and how do they do these marketing surveys? i'd buy the book just for that oops forgot the link lol http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=books Last edited by Samsa : 01-17-2003 at 09:40 PM. |

I think it's an apt description of SUV drivers. An ex-prime minister in Australia suggested a Tax on SUVs and described them as a "pox on our roads". Needless to say, SUV owners threw a hissy fit. I reckon they'll become incredibly unhip in a few years. After all, it's only really aging baby-boomers and upper-class women who really support the market for SUVs to and great length. |

Then I support terrorism.
Anywho... this debate is getting old and worn. If you're going to single out SUVs on the environment, single out luxary cars and sport cars that have huge displacement. It's all about choice. Later on this year I might pick up a turbo sports car. And if I do so, the first mod I'm doing is to cut the cats and get a boost controller. Not because I hate the environment.... I'm very fond of the sky, trees, grassy plains, ants, and large bodies of water. But until companies start to make other alternatives as good as fossil fuel, I have no plans on moving on. And btw, unless you're driving an electric or hybrid you really have no room to speak. -This is me, being self centered. |

well the book isn't just about the gas-guzzling. it's also about uhh. the fact that if you get into a crash with an suv it is probable that its front bumper will crash through your windshield and pulverize your head

People shouldn't have a choice between fucking the planet over and not fucking the planet over. The situation is much much bigger than your "right to choose" Why aren't you being responsible with your right to choose? I think individuality stretches too far on matters like these, because it's a matter that trancends your individual rights. It's really an issue for the human race as a collective social organism than it is your right to buy whatever the fuck you want because you're a self centred little prick. asshole. it's not our fucking fault that they don't put out more "environment-friendly" vehicles out. why doesn't our government do something? they're too concerned about bombing the shit outta everyone.

If this is your way of thinking, then please by all means, don't buy a car, ever. And if you do, electric hybrid only. It is the most responsible desicion when it comes to purchasing a car. And if you can't afford one (although very affordable) walk. When it comes to pollution, the oil wells are sure to run empty before we start dying. So get over yourself. |

I'm 22, don't own a car and use public transport, my bike, and my feet. I only borrow a vehicle for journies that are unreachable by other means. because I give a shit. i've put the planet before myself. funny that. {edit} not that I expect everyone to do that. i just expect people to not drive SUVs _- Last edited by My lgloo : 01-18-2003 at 01:00 AM. |

The point is, SUVs spew out excessive emissions for what is, in essence a vanity car. At least the majority of other vehicles do something useful. |

sure it is... besides, if we all start walking and taking public transportation... there will have to be a lot more of the bigger vehicles around to take the people where they wanna go. i agree they should make more electric cars and shit, but i don't see what the point is on bashing people who drive SUV's... it's not like it's doing SO MUCH MORE damage than everything else. like i said, the world is going to shit sooner or later.
