Default Gish discussion thread (1991 vs 1994 vs 2011)

So which is your preferred version?

Original Caroline 1991 mastering
1994 remaster
2011 remaster (24 bit 96kHz hi-res)

I definitely would have preferred the high resolution digital audio download from 2011 -if it had been available for me...

Didn't even know there was a '94 version. That could be the one I own for all I know, I knew it was remastered/reissued very shortly after its initial release but I thought it was before SD even

2011 version sounds quite good tbh

Yeah Billy had it remastered in 1994. He was disappointed with the sound of the original and blamed it on the decision to master it onto DAT tape I think. He said you can notice the difference the most in the lower registers of the rhythm guitar. The 1994 remaster has more weight.

The Dynamic Range Database is interesting for Gish:

http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/li...st=&album=gish

The 1991 is the most dynamic (a higher DR value means more dynamic range).

Rather disappointingly the Hi-Res remaster has a lower dynamic range than the two 90s masterings.

1991 DR13
1994 DR11
2011 DR08

Still sounds quite good to me, tho I must say the only time I've listened to "new gish" recently has been on vinyl, which probably has a considerably different DR. At least they didn't bring it to 3 territory like the Shiny stuff

You cant really measure vinyl DR properly. And it really depends if they did a different mastering for the vinyl or just used the hi-res.

Red face

From someone, who should know it:

Corgan has been fully involved in putting together the reissues, which begin with the Nov. 29 release of 1991's "Gish" and 1993's "Siamese Dream." Both feature remastered (by Bob Ludwig) versions of the original albums and a second disc of rare and unreleased material, while deluxe editions add DVDs of concerts filmed at Chicago's Metro from August 1990 and August 1993, respectively. Corgan says he's particular stoked by the sound on the "Siamese Dream" reissue.

"It's stunning, the quality level. It really recasts it in a different light," Corgan explains. "It's a real massive upgrade in terms of the quality of the album, sonically, that was shocking."

Bob Ludwig about the "loudness war":

Bob Ludwig about the "loudness war":

Hmm, not sure I fully agree. I'm so used to the 1994 remaster that the 2011 one with less dynamic range is not as satisfying. I mean, if we could have had a 24-96 resolution version with a DR of 11 I'd have had more fun comparing the two.

Bob's examples in that video don't really tell us anything about Gish. Chinese Democracy is DR10, and considering Gish has a few quieter songs a DR08 seems too low.

can someone with technical knowhow explain to me what's the point of a higher bitrate if the dynamic range is the same or lowered?

2011 remaster sounds fine, the original recording was always a little tinny and treble-heavy.

Sounds fine isn't really saying much. And don't you mean the original mastering rather than recording? They're all from the same recording.

This thread got off to a slow start, but is now exactly what I signed up for.

Has anyone actually answered the question of which version they preferred?
