Default 7 Shades of Black is almost unlistenable.

It's so shrill and tries so hard to be heavy but it just sounds thin and Bobo sounds like he just woke up and he's singing about how his sister can't spell (prob cause it's really jesse in a wig)

I just distinctly remember it being the moment when I knew the album was fucked. Doomsday Clock was bad but I was like yeah but that's just the first song then 7SOB hits and you're like ugh

Like most of Zeitgeist, this track would've absolutely ripped with better/different production. Like imagine it being recorded in the vein of a song like Bodies. Would've translated much, much better.

I remember hearing an early live version of Bleeding the Orchid and thinking this was so bad ass and wanting to hear the studio version and then I did and was like WTF is this the same song and it was and that is the story of Zeitgeist.

7shades kicks ass, it's just neutered on the record. the guitars are reedy and thin, the cymbals/hats have the goose pimpling swishiness of new, too tight corduroy pants. makes me wanna fart

Honestly ZG would be up there with the Machinas if it had the AOL sessions Doomsday Clock, live version of Pomp, and United States

i still don't understand how a producer like roy thomas baker could produce such a shitty sounding record

i mean, the guy who got to record freddie mercury, one of music's greatest vocalists ever, couldn't even tell something sounded horribly, horribly wrong with zeitgeist? that's just not fair

I don't know what's so special about that AOL session. Sounds even more lifeless than the album to my ears.

I think the co-produced by Billy Corgan qualifier tells you all you need to know.

Besides, RTB only produced three songs that made the proper album and production-wise, they're probably the least offensive.

Also, it's probably a case of a virtuoso losing his touch. Same reason George Romero and John Carpenter can't direct for shit anymore. And also why the Billy Corgan of the last decade and a half sucks.

Yeah the bonus DVD is really misleading about RTB, seems he didn't have that much involvement at all.

A producer ultimately serves the artist, and I have no doubt that the "problem" aspects of this album originated with Billy.

she thinks lots of songs are about her.
as does courtney.

billy's got a history of dating dumb girls - so it could be about anyone.

fairly certain i've succeeded in mentioning this every time this song comes up in a thread, but i remember hearing the live version first, and thinking the chorus went, "there's only one shade of black" instead of "cause i want you bad."

does it make sense? cohere with the rest of the lyrics/title? perhaps not.

is it a cooler lyric? i think yes!

i do like the couplet rhyme scheme, though. feels almost sloppy, which fits the tone/theme
