Default Pumpkins fans...

At least the die hards, have got to be some of the most insufferable humorless beings alive. Good god.

What is that due to? Fish rots from head down?

by the way we just got interviewed (by the former drummer of Sebadoh!) and he straight up asked me "what the hell is with your love of the smashing pumpkins?!?"

It turned into a whole discussion about bands that impacted us at a younger age we never quite grew out of, but I also defended them as a band (not BC’s Jones rants etc) and did mention my guitar playing is strongly influenced by SP.

The problem isn't the fans, it's the artist.

smashing pumpkins fans are inherently mentally deficient

also (larger world view) they're not that great of a band

band attracts people with specific mental issues and personality disorders because of the lyrics/themes I think. Also, old fans seem to continuously get alienated and pushed away, replaced by people in their early 20s who aren't mature enough to stop buying BC's horseshit. when's the last time you encountered someone who listened to SD when it was new and still is interested in the band? When I saw them this summer, the crowd was diverse but mostly 25-40 I would say. Not too many folks who were already 30 in 1993 still hanging around

I don't think the problem is that the band appeals to people of a certain disposition, rather just the opposite, SP's large and eclectic catalog of pop/alt.rock/emo/metal/goth/electronica/industrial has such a broad appeal that it brings together a lot of people who don't have much in common, and who see the world differently. The more narrowly defined an interest, the more likely it is that fans or enthusiasts are similar people in general, and vice versa.

I agree 100%.

The more I go to therapy, the more I suspect that Billy himself is aware of this.

Like shooting fish in a barrel. SD-MCIS in particular.

But they were also a phenomenal band in the early 90’s because drugs, appealing to the biggest music-buying demographic.
It’s often raised on here but I sometimes doubt Billy Corgan wrote the lyrical content of MCIS.

I send him a handwritten letter after each session.

He didn't write any of it. The whole thing was created by Boris, who did it for a laugh.

Judging by Billy’s instagram, it seems like most of his supporters right now are either Latinos who are relatively new to American popular culture (and thus unaware of the total shitshow that Billy has been throwing for 20+ years) or displaced lower class white people (who would otherwise be listening to ICP.)

I hate to say that but it’s true. Anyone who has spent a great deal of time engaged with rock music as an art form on a deeper level has long abandoned ship. Billy just keeps skimming the surface for newcomers who have not yet experienced shoegaze bliss or extended guitar solos and think it’s a novelty.

He also has had a tendency to skim the surface for band mates who have never experienced touring with a real band (i.e., Jeff, Ginger, Nicole, MIKE BURNS, etc.)

Oh...and his baby mama is basically a young trophy wife (but not actually even his wife.) So there’s just kind of a pervasive pattern here of skimming the surface for people who are not his equal and can’t take him task on things. And, along with that, he actively cuts people out who are capable of leveling legitimate criticism at him (i.e., D’arcy, untrue fans, Pitchfork, Netphoria.)

Classic Trump-ian narcissism.

He’s a pretty good guitar player though.

Exclamation

I saw a guy in a SP heart (original style at least) this weekend and thought about stopping him and asking him if he was more of a Sad Machines or a Netphoria kind of dude, but I realized I didn't want to know either way

I did chat with a guy in an Achewood shirt though and he was cool, so, I'm sure that's relevant to this discussion somehow
