subjective, impossible to quantify, also its not permanent. climate migrations are gonna be crazy. automation looks to be disasterous and the rich are already consolidating their power so they can live in walled forts away from the unemployed masses.

lmao ok fukuyama cool cool no wonder you actually like hillary clinton

a lot of these liberal capitalist self-justifications rest on subjective quantification of what 'better' and 'good' are

besides the fact that all of this ignores the climate, as always with liberal self-congratulation.

i already mentioned climate migrations but the primary reasons lives are so "better" and "good" is through entertainment & convenience technology at the low low cost of literally destroying the planet & causing a mass extinction

liberals ignore this because they think the entrepreneurial adventure capitalists like elon musk will invent a thing to save us

i'm glad we have a small political party that focuses primarily on the climate. more people appartently think so, they went from 2 to 5 mp's.

I don't really see an argument that the world is worse now than in the past by any of those measures, and saying things are "impossible to quantify" without explaining why you think that when there is quantifiable data on some of this stuff available doesn't make sense to me. We know the size of the population, and we know roughly what portion of it is subjected to war, disease, poverty, illiteracy, etc.

If you were making the argument that things were much worse in the past than we even realize, I would buy that because there is likely a lot of lost or unrecorded data, but I don't buy that war and disease and crime were somehow over-reported in the past compared to now when we have pretty reliable means of figuring out roughly how likely you are as one person out of seven billion to be murdered or die of starvation.

In WWII, about 1% of the global population died. That's really actually not that large a number proportional to the population size when you consider how endemic war and disease were in the past.

Of course like I said we seem to be headed towards a huge collapse and we continue to increase our ability to actually destroy ourselves as a species, but the argument is essentially over quality of living now.

i don't consider netherlands a place to take asylum because you're mostly already below sea level

right now the list is norway, sweden, denmark, scotland, ecuador, possibly argentina. depending on elections france & germany can jump right in there.

any time you use good/better you're making a subjective argument based on your bias of being a person of your era. compare/contrasting history is against studying history. its like pop history or some other useless discipline entirely.

things were different then, i'm not using "worse" or "better"

do you have any idea about the history of written records and how short & limited & unreliable it is?

as far as i know war started getting bad in the 17th century (because of guns, actually) escalated in the 19th century and peaked with the world war era because of gunpowder, industrialization, mechinization & national drafts.

your basic medieval battle or siege was nothing compared to the trenches of the western front or Antietam or even Napoleonic battles.

yep, pretty much fucked anyway here.

i could go back to the place i used to live, if the shit hits the fan big time than that should be nice little coastal city.

norway may be the most beautiful country i've seen (when i also visited c33 in 2005...!). it is apparently also no 1 on the list of happiest countries in the world. go for it.
