just got Portraits by Maribou State. UK elecronic duo, since people love comparisons, I'd compare the sound to Disclosure (on a chill-pill.)
very smooth, I like it.

Self Defense are really cool in like a fugazi sonic youth type way. Adventures is shiny power pop with big guitars. Bully is similar but grungier. That dan mang an album is a cool alt country type thing, really awesome production. Cherubs is shoegazeish.

It's pretty good, it's nice and short, and it's cool because it breaks form a lot while dropping little tastes of things past. It's not one of their best albums though.

S/T < A.M. < Summerteeth < Star Wars < Sky Blue Sky < Ghost is Born < Whole Love < Being There < YHF

Whole Love is fantastic, but Wilco the Album is a disastrous, super lazy rehash of their career up until that point. I really thought they were finished after that and I was blown away when the next thing they released was The Whole Love.

also I know it's a collaboration, but Mermaid Ave. 1 is really the best thing this band has ever been involved in.

Default Max Richter - Sleep

did anyone else get the new Max Richter album "Sleep" yet?
worked with neuro scientists to get the waves right or something

http://www.deutschegrammophon.com/us/cat/4795267

all I need now to give it a try is an undisturbed bed - for 8 hours and 24 minutes.

there's also an hour long edited version on LP - "From Sleep."

I've been rather enjoying a release by my city's very own Greenfog, who put out Bruce Farm in March of this year. The band members name Earth, My Bloody Valentine, Isis, Sleep, Dead Meadow, and Yawning Man as influences upon their current sound. It is probably best described as somewhat of a blend of drone, desert rock, post-rock, and doom metal.

One of their best in the last few years, nice to hear them changing direction too. Such a great band. I wasn't huge on The Invisible Way but loved C'mon and Drums and Guns. Really high consistency from a contemporary band.

It's great! I didn't even realise they had a new one out. I miss some of the pandemonium of Whenever, If Ever - those moments when three people were singing different stuff over each other and the music felt like it could burst under the weight of all the different things happening at once - but I feel like they've really gone more rock on this album and it's really great.

This morning i'm listening to Black Wing - Black Wing Is Doomed, a new project from Dan Barrett of Have A Nice Life/Giles Corey/Enemies List Home Recordings. Lo-fi synth-and-drum-machine-driven gothy shoegaze stuff. Very impressed.

I tried the new Chvrches, Every Open Eye.

Meh.

Needs more "spins" (ya you can spin mp3's....) but i think this is a classic case of this band has one sound and will always have that sound. Or maybe its just what they felt was expected of a sophomore, more of what worked the first time around. Except now it's not as new, in fact the very first song i felt, wow this vocal melody, pattern and rhythm is like lifted from a song on the first record. There ARE some songs that stood out more but they still feel like second rate Bones of What you Believe (and there's one where one of the guy sings, there were two of those on the first and they were meh, this one is downright bad...and mainly because of the singing, leave it to ******, you wanna sing, maybe make it a side project). Even the lyrics seem to be about exactly the same thing (failing/difficult relationship)

We'll see but it's turning out to be a bad year music wise for me. There's very very few current bands i like and those there are did not deliver.

The new Chvrches is ok. Some of the songs are catchier than anything on the first album. And some of the songs are just super corny and fall flat. The production seems to be better. It sounds like they are using more expensive equipment. It doesn't sound as cheap as the first album. Like they got better keyboards / synthesizers and better drum machines.

i dont necessarily agree but if that's the case, i guess it's why i like it less!
