That Savages track is good. For some reason I've never checked them out. Better get that sorted!

I concur. Some of my favorite singers are women and/or played an instrument in one of my favorite bands. Also, the indelible influence that some of these women singers/musicians had over bands in the past 40-50 years is quite evident if you get past all the machismo bullshit in rock music.

I would say almost all my favorite bands have women in them.

Rock in general is way too much of a cockfest.

Siouxsie is a great example of a highly underrated singer/songwriter who is still influencing bands. I'd say a high percentage of bands I see have ripped her off in some form or another; not only her singing style and stage presence/look, but musically as well.

Yup, yup.

I mean way more people seem to know about Robert Smith but they don't realize that he played in The Banshees and then totally ripped off her image.

Q: I've heard Siouxsie Sioux state she's responsible for your "lipstick look", is this true?

Smith: No. I wore lipstick at school. I copied my lipstick from my mum, not Siouxsie, although there are similarities between the two. I've worn make-up to varying degrees since I was 13 but I do wear less now than I used to. I started developing the smeared lipstick look when we were doing Pornography.

There are fashion similarities between a lot of fringe/punk/alternative players of the late 70s and early 80s. Beyond that her "image" has always been her own. And Smith has projected a very different persona, whether on stage or in public. And his vocal style is unique as well. I wouldn't say he took any of that from her.

I think you'd have a better argument if you said Michael Stipe ripped off Patti Smith.

I remember reading another interview where he admitted to being a big fan and that he began dressing like her because of it. I'll try and find it.

Regardless it's not a knock against him (I absolutely adore Robert and The Cure) but rather I'm just pointing out an example of where a male artist was celebrated more for something a female artist did first.

i've read that before as well about souixsiesixise/robert.

its a known pattern that when bands become super famous they stop giving props to their up-and-coming contemporaries at the time when they were still up and coming.

maybe its memory but i say its ego.

Same difference. I didn't mean "ripped off" in a negative way. It's just a shame that she doesn't get her dues as much as she should.

I always find it awesome when fanboys go all defensive. Especially because I only talk shit on the artists I like. I don't know anything about/care about artists I don't like.

It only matters when something was ripped-off if band doing the ripping sucks.
But the actuall ripping-off isn't what makes them sick.

I mean, I love Pavement, but holy shit Malkmus must like The Fall.
