I had a student last year that was JW. She was a wonderful student and her family was great, but they refused to let her participate in any patriotic activities... which in 2nd grade is a lot of what we do in social studies. No learning about the history of the flag, memorizing the words, studying about customs and celebrations etc. And since that was a state standard I had to go to the principal about it and the principal said I'm mandated by state to teach it and it she doesn't participate she gets points deducted. That sucked.
