Confession: I've never watched any Jodorowsky. Should I kill myself now or later?

Nerve - 4/5
Movie about an online dare game that drives teens to do really crazy stuff. it felt like a very long and good Black Mirror episode (which is a good thing in my book). There are some very cheesy moments, but they didn't detract from an otherwise tense and quirky movie. Fake James Franco (Dave Franco) was kinda annoying. Emma Roberts was great and adorable. |

Gonna show Blade Runner to my girlfriend for the first time tonight. She's 11 years older than me and has never seen it.

Watched Arrival last night. Meh.
Felt like something M. Night Shyamalan would've made after Signs. Didn't impress me much. Were people really that bowled over by it? Is this going to be one of those films like Contact that we all look back on and resent? |

I thought Arrival was wonderful. Beautifully shot, cool story and great acting all around.
The ending twist was beautiful to me and I was in tears by the end. |

I just thought it was mostly boring, and this is coming from someone who rarely ever lobs that criticism at a movie.

Ida - 4/5
simple premise, beautiful, and short. pretty good combo, especially considering it takes a lot of effort for me to sit down for long movies these days.

I dunno. Maybe if I had kids or was kid adjacent, I would've appreciated Arrival a lil more.

Alien: Covenant - 3/5
I liked it marginally better than Prometheus. It actually develops some good tension, which is almost ruined by some goofy scenes but it somehow kept it together. The ending reveal was super telegraphed but the way it was done was really good. I'd really like to sit down and talk to a fan of the series who could explain what the Alien life cycle is at this point. To me it seems the filmmakers just change the rules whenever they feel like it. |

it always amuses me when franchise geeks have ferocious rhetoric battles over stuff like that because it's usually obvious that they're just trying to force making sense of a disjointed narrative stitched together by several writers/producers/directors/etc according to whatever whim they had at the moment
and i mean i get it, sometimes you want it to make sense and it sucks admitting that your favorite film franchise is just a trademarked piece on the hollywood chessboard that'll be compromised as much as necessary in order to squeeze an extra buck. sorry, i'm being a cynical asshole can't wait to watch Covenant, mostly because it's great entertainment though. i don't really have big expectations for it as an Alien film, if that makes sense. |
