The ideal arena scenario, for the Pumpkins, is that they pull in a Radiohead-type crowd: People in their 20's through 40's, all of whom came to the music at key points in their lives and love it. Of course, that will never happen, and the realistic best case scenario is a Foo Fighters crowd. The problem is most of those casual fans already went to see the 20th Anniversary Tour and it was a nightmare. Why, 10 years later, should they try again?

As far as the setlist goes, they'll play a couple barnburners like Ruby, Geek, or Porcelina. Billy no longer avoids the hype around those. But they will play every single hit song too: Today, Disarm, Bullet, 1979, Tonight, Tonight, Ava, Cherub Rock. And... who is dying to hear those songs in an arena right now?

It's right on the edge of whether it's worth seeing or not. All I know is I'm not paying $40 for a fucking t-shirt when I do.

Even Albini doesn't like Surfer Rosa. It's ok. But Frank Black's songwriting was in TOP FORM on Doolittle. This isn't conjecture, it's fact.

I probably just like it for its nostalgic value, come to think of it. It's a great album nonetheless imo.
You've heard FB's solo record?

I really like Frank Black's "Teenager of the Year" the one with 'headache' and 'I want to live on an abstract plain'. His solo stuff can be hit or miss though.

1. You're not the target consumer for a $40 T-Shirt. That's for the rich kids who want bragging rights

2. You know the crowd will go wild for those hits because by sheer numbers the casual fans will make up more of the audience. I highly doubt the average attendee has followed BC's descent these past 20 years. It will be a mix of older fans who only remember the hits or younger fans who have only heard the hits.

1. I dropped $40 on a Radiohead t-shirt last year because their t-shirts are awesome and I'm not embarrassed to wear it.

2. Have you been to SP shows in the past 10 years? The audience reaction to the hits has been mixed at best; 1979 is the only consistent "go wild" moment. Not sure I would count on the people they drag into these arenas being more excited.

a lot of the shows sounded terrible in the past 10 years. i would *hope* jimmy and james wouldn't butcher their own music so badly. but i might be very wrong. it has to be better than with mike byrne, right???

lol, did the same. head t-shirts still have great quality, don't look like shit, don't give me a rash, and I am a fucking sucker for tour shirts. It makes me happy to spot one now and then, no matter what country.

I came pretty close to the merch stand on the manson sp tour (because I cannot help myself) and then realized I won't ever wear it, not even in the basement-gym, let alone that I am kinda really REALLY too old for slapthelogonit no-style.

then again we aren't true fans, as Bolly said so himself.
looked up the definition and yep, I agree, I am not. of music, sure - which is the part that matters the least here.

He will waste at least 10 minutes of the set with "united states" or some terrible cover that nobody cares about.

Just accept the fact you're a legacy act and don't play anything written after 2000.

Same set list every night? :/ That's become one of my least favorite things since they started doing it in 2008.

I'm sure it helps out the lighting and sound crews, but...it seems like such a simple thing that can keep fans guessing and make each show unique.

I remember buying tickets on a whim for the next show when I'd already traveled out for one ~9 years ago. It was disappointing finding out I was basically seeing the exact same show.

They should be able to do that anyway before they start the tour.

cool, but no, you got it exactly the wrong way around.

Doolittle is great and I will love it always but literally everything about Surfer Rosa - the uniqueness/idiosyncrasy, the energy, the recording, the songs, is better

I can't stand the Pixies. Listening to Frank Black yelp atonally is not my idea of a good time.

The Breeders though

Exactly! When I first heard Where Is My Mind, I couldn't have guessed for the life of me that it's a song from the 80s.

SR is just... a perfect record.

I do think I need to revisit Dolittle, though.
