Lana del Rey posted a message on instagram basically trying to say that she felt unjustly criticized because of some of her lyrics. Which sure, would be a fair point, but she felt the need to specifically namedrop women of color artists to frame herself as a victim and as being somehow silenced.

Lana Del Rey is not a racist.

She was highlighting racism. And I don’t mean she was highlighting racism against white people. This is a subtle, insidious racism of diminished expectations. It’s ok for women of colour to sing about being broken, being abused, having mental health issues but Lana Del Rey is a pretty white woman and should behave with some dignity. This is “othering” on a global scale.

That isn’t the exact point she made but she was pretty close to it, to piercing the veil and realising what the music industry really is. Of course, the gatekeepers couldn’t allow that so set to work on destroying her credibility and career. We’re talking about people who made Rihanna paint her face, dance and sing about being beaten by Chris Brown, glamourised it and marketed it to kids. To little girls. What lesson do you think people learned from that? Now the same gatekeepers say Lana Del Rey is racist? Gimme a break.

This kind of thing is one of many reasons why people think they can treat people of colour like shit.

My problem with libertarianism (in the American sense. I’m actually quite libertarian left on the political compass) is that being socially left wing is kinda rendered meaningless if you’re right wing economically. Corporations aren’t people. I try to understand everyone’s views though. One of my two best friends is libertarian. We argue about it a lot but I respect him still. Unless Forgotten Child is advocating for fascism, I agree he shouldn’t be demonized simply for having a view we don’t like.
