The 90's were phenomenal circumstances. I consider them "massively popular" in the era of anti-rock, given all their accolades. Manson (the only other "band" that I can think of to be comparable, i.e "reunion" around the same time 2004, only original member left, etc) had a commercially viable album that only shifted 10,000 units. The Pumpkins album sold five times that. I would classify Manson as being a popular rock group, thus saying the Pumpkins were a massively popular rock group during those years. They're a first (or second) billed band for a reason.

During the Mike Byrne era, Billy refereed to Mike as Samurai Mike for some reason. He (Mike) also started wearing a Japanese Rising Sun headband (later changing it to represent the foreign markets like Italy, etc). Billy also started to dress in a Chinese tunics during this time frame.

2010-2013 Pumpkins were neither massively popular nor pathetically scraping by. They were a very serviceable rock act with a legacy - just like they are now and just like they were in 2007/2008. They got PLENTY of coverage for Oceania and the Teargarden shit. They also got on a bunch of festivals and could fill theaters with that lineup. It just wasn’t a cultural phenomenon like “Harlem shake” or whatever stupid shit was big back then.

If Billy does stuff under the Pumpkins name, it will get attention and make him money.
