it's less than a "band" at this point, and more of a Billy Corgan art side project.

It's more of a WPC's tea shop-side project...

Songs In The Key of X: Music From and Inspired by The X-Files

Fuck yeah, that album was a jam. My first exposure to Nick Cave, Danzig and Soul Coughing.

i kinda miss the times of producers personality and taste influencing the record. sure corgan wrote the songs, but there's a reason why someone like flood or vig, people who corgan clearly respected, overlooking things made for greater music than 'just some guy' engineering or doing a mix.

are there even personality driven producers anymore? i guess you can pay steve albini to play solitaire while you record in his studio.

When the songs themselves truly suck...

the producer no longer matters anyways.. and that's where we're at now.

Question

"...FORMS OF RELEASE STILL PENDING"

Is he talking about the kind of audio format or even the distribution...?

Great. A new SP album to smear more shit on their legacy.

Can't wait!

Next one to be an 'actual' album - a double.

"When we got back together with James (Iha, founding guitarist), we went in with Rick Rubin and did eight songs. It was put out as a formal album, but I said at the time — and I did mean it — in my eyes, it wasn't an album. We didn't approach it like we've approached every other album we'd ever done, which is more like making a movie.

In many ways, this is the first real album (since the reunion) where we've hunkered down and made a classic, "Let's throw it all at the wall and see what happens" type of Pumpkins record. I've been working on it for over a year. It currently is at 21 songs, and we're going to release it as a double this year.

This is the first album since the album that came out in 2000, "Machina," where me, James and Jimmy worked on something for a very long time. It's got a greater conceptual base, and it's probably a wider swath of music. The last one was kind of like, "Let's just jump in, record some stuff real fast, and let it be what it is," ... so I'm excited about this, because we're kind of back in the lane of taking a risk, and trying to bring something new to the table, as opposed to just aping what we're known for. "

fuck, he sure does no how to reel a man back in from the point of (seemingly) no return

i'd say this was about my 3rd or 4th reel in, at that - i'm just going to do away with the whole notion of being "done" with this band because i know next time he'll just bring D'arcy or Butch Vig or someone back & raise some miraculous level of intrigue all over again

bring the god damn thing on, boys!

Well at least it sounds like they're making an effort.

Does it?

An effort would probably mean them in the studio working together for a month or so.

Not James and Jimmy turning up for a few days to record parts, and then leaving it for Billy to assemble with his post-2000 production and vocal expertise for the next 12 months.

I'll listen to it. I'll be optimistic, sure. SOTSB had 2-3 reasonable tracks, but paled against the OG stuff.

The problem will all the new stuff: Corgan's production preferences and vocal habits are kinda terrible. And his writing has dumbed down.

So it'll be exciting to hear at first, the novelty of new SP music. But a few goes round and those 'choices' of his will begin to grate. The result will most likely be consigned to the recycle bin.

I'd love to be wrong of course.

They’re actually recording in studio together and they’re not just rerecording D4N tracks?

Ok, I’m interested.

*Remembers “Fight the feeling, ride the rainbow”

No, no, no. Still interested.

Ehhh, sonically it's the best sounding Pumpkins release from the 2007 and on reboot. Can't really fault Rubin for the production value. It's just that the songwriting wasn't enticing
