That's kind of weird because I am currently listening to Amjad Ali Khan

Not jazz, unless you count 13th century Indian classical music as jazz.

This is brilliant. I have a bunch of albums he recorded with Eric Dolphy and even though the quality is kind of poor they are pretty electric.

Also, Albert Ayler as usual.

i haven't listened to any jazz in a while. since i stopped downloading music, i haven't bought any. mostly because jazz sections in record shops are always confusing to me

btw are there any really good jazz albums nowadays? everything i listen to is at least from the 70s, usually older

i am not sure if it falls under jazz per se, but the most recent colin stetson album (bass saxophonist) is fucking amazing

I just got the Ayler album of old spirituals (I think it's Goin Home?). truly amazing, his tone is that much more amazing when you have a baseline to compare it against

José James - The Dreamer is pretty good. I would also recommend some of Esperanza Spalding's earlier work: her self titled Esperanza or Chamber Music Society.

I made a jazz thread like a year ago asking who was a better artist Andrew Hill or Vince Guaraldi.

I like "A Kind of Blue" but other than that Jazz is not really on my radar.

I have to be in the right mood for jazz to be honest. I picked up a bunch of cheap Herbie Hancock albums last month and am starting to work my way through them.

Agreed - I really have to be in the mood. But when I am, and the right album hits - it's tough to beat.

That said, I own about 6 jazz albums, with the top 3 listed below my favorites by a few good steps. Who/what should I buy next that is along the same vein? I really just started with "the best of the best" style albums, and haven't dug any deeper.

I've got:
  1. Coltrane - Love Supreme
  2. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
  3. Dave Brubeck - Take Five
  4. Miles Davis - Dig
  5. Miles Davis - Porgy & Bess
  6. Miles Davis - Seven Steps to Heaven

Suggestions desired!

I'm sort of in the same boat as you. You should get Mingus, he's probably my favourite jazz artist.

As far as jazz pianists go (since you listed Brubeck) I would recommend Vince Guaraldi. Specifically these albums: Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus, A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing, and Alma-ville

I would also recommend Andrew Hill as far as jazz pianists. Specifically: Black Fire, Judgment!

I haven't been been listening to any jazz lately...just Kurt Weill.

I've been working my way through a book called How to Improvise by Hal Crook...it has been slow going.

top of my head

(it sounds like you are not really into super free-noisy stuff or electric jazz from this list)

Coltrane - Giant Steps / My Favorite Things / Blue Train
Miles - Sketches of Spain / Filles de Kilimanjaro / Miles Smiles
- > his electric period is awesome but totally different. Bitches Brew / In a Silent Way / Tribute to Jack Johnson
Keith Jarrett - the Koln Concert
Oliver Nelson - the Blues and the Abstract Truth
Freddie Hubbard - Ready for Freddie
