After months of waiting and all sorts of rumors, Microsoft eventually confirmed the hardware requirements for their far-too-many-times delayed Windows Vista, which is supposed to amaze everyone from January 2007.

As many experts had already announced, Windows Vista will require much from the PCs where it will be installed when it comes to resources. For minimum functionality, Windows Vista will need an 800 MHz processor, at least 512 MB of RAM, a 20GB HDD and at least 15GB free, as well as a SVGA- and DirectX 9- compliant video card. The PCs which meet these requirements will be labeled by Microsoft as "Vista PC Capable".

However, the users who want to be thrilled by the Aero interface experience presented as one of Windows Vista's biggest innovations will have to own a PC with a processor of at least 1 GHz, 1GB or RAM memory, a video card with 128MB, a HDD of at least 40GB and an internal or external DVD-ROM. These PCs will be "awarded" by Microsoft with the "Vista Premium Ready" label. Aside from the system requirements, the PC certifying program and the designing of a web site which should act as a counsellor for those who want to know which conditions must be met by their PCs in order to run Windows Vista were the other two important news announced by Microsoft.

Nobody was expecting Windows Vista not to want more from the PCs (this being one of the mantras respected by Microsoft with each new OS launch), but this time the software giant pushed things a bit too far.

As these requirements were published, Windows Vista seems to have become a more and more complicated business for Microsoft. After their promised OS set a new record for the most postponed Windows in the history of the company different release dates were also set for companies and for regular users, now Microsoft comes up with system requirements which aren't even met by more than half of the computers in a company's labs. Do Microsoft officials really think that there will be companies which will decide to add 128MB video cards to their computers just so their employees can play with the mouse in the Aero interface? There are already some experts, like those from the Gartner analysis company, who recommended companies to wait a bit until they finally decide to acquire Windows Vista for their computers. Now, with such hardware requirements, the number of clients who will buy the OS is expected to become even lower.

As for the regular users, does Microsoft actually hope that they'll rush into stores during the winter holidays in order to buy "Windows Vista Ready" PCs or components to upgrade their own computers just to run Windows Vista in January 2007?

And, as experience taught us with the last Windows version, the offiical system requirements are really minimum, so those who'll want to run other software applications as well aside from Windows Vista will need to add even more RAM, processing power or a better video card.

So, as if the problems that Windows Vista was already facing weren't enough, Microsoft seems to insist even more on driving customers away from their new OS. Not to mention the fact that, lately, PC sales are not going very well either, as notebook computers gain more and more market share instead. And if you'll have the curiosity to consult some notebook computers offers, you'll notice that there aren't many entry-level or mid-range configurations which more or less meet Windows Vista's requirements.

Microsoft seems to forget that, since the release of Windows XP, some things have changed in the world of technology and actually hopes that Windows Vista will boots PC sales. But this once, in the complex economical climate nowadays, Microsoft seems to have miscalculated things. And this may cost the company dearly, especially now, when a failure should have been out of the question.

BILLY CORGAN BUYS A PIECE OF THE GOLD COAST

Ten months after selling his Victorian painted lady mansion in Lake View for $1 million, former Smashing Pumpkins lead singer and chief songwriter Billy Corgan has paid $2.95 million for a recently renovated, historic six-room condominium on the Gold Coast.

After disbanding the Smashing Pumpkins, Corgan formed a new group, Zwan, which is playing three sold-out shows at the Double Door this weekend.

Through his tour manager, Corgan declined to comment on the purchase of the two-bedroom condo. His tour manager confirmed that the singer-songwriter recently has been staying at the condo while rehearsing for Zwan's current tour, but said the Chicago-area native ultimately intends to lease the condo in a 110-year-old building to someone else. The unit has an oak-paneled living room, reception room, balcony framed by granite columns, four fireplaces, walnut parquet floors and a large terrace.

Corgan has shown an affinity for vintage properties. After moving out of the more than 100-year-old Lake View home at 3448 N. Greenview Ave., which he owned from 1993 to 2001, Corgan temporarily stayed in a penthouse in the Haberdasher Square loft development, 728 W. Jackson Blvd., a former manufacturing building that dates to 1926. And in 2000, the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois awarded Corgan its President's Award for his commitment to historic preservation.

Since Corgan sold his Lake View home, one Smashing Pumpkins Web site reported that he has been living in Italy, but in interviews he has declined any comment on his permanent residence.

Singer Courtney Love, whom Corgan dated many years ago, just sold her loft in downtown Manhattan for $3 million after buying it for $2.6 million in January 2001, according to the New York Post. The loft is in the same building where rocker Lenny Kravitz just listed his own, five-bedroom, 7,000-square-foot, multilevel loft for $16 million, after buying the space unfinished in October 2000 for $8 million, the Post reported.

Love also recently listed her almost 3,700-square-foot Spanish-style house on Los Angeles' Westside -- which she bought last June for $3 million -- for about the same price, according to the Los Angeles Times. Love reportedly is looking for another house in the area because her five-bedroom house, which was built in the 1920s, is too small.

Ironically, Love told the Times last year that she sold a four-bedroom, 4,700-square-foot French country-style house on almost 2 acres in the Hollywood Hills -- which she had purchased from Ellen DeGeneres in 1997 for about $3 million -- because she was planning to spend more time in New York and actually wanted something smaller in L.A. She sold the Hollywood Hills home for $3.995 million in March 2001 to British businessman Mike Walley. Last fall, Durst bought the four-bedroom, 6,600-square-foot house, which was once owned by the Doors' Robbie Krieger and has a carving of the Doors playing on one wall, for just under $4 million, the paper reported. Durst recently bought a house with a sound studio in L.A.'s Hollywood Hills, and has listed that home for $1.4 million, the Times reported.

15gb is kind of a lot but this really isn't 1995 anymore. there are 750gb hard disks and 512mb graphics cards now. and low integrated graphics chips which support dx9 are coming out too.

yeah, i don't see the problem. my computer is six years-old, and aside from only having 128mb of ram, it fits the premium requirements.

Really yeah cause no one can afford to spend 40$ on a 180 gig hard drive. Sorry but can you show me exactly where those specs are any different from XP.

what most of us by for personal use, yeah it'd be fine. but it'd likely pose a problem for the computers a lot of companies currently own. on new computers a company buys, i guess it depends how soon they're buying them, but i believe the most recent computer i got for work had 512mb of ram default...

what advantages does this os offer that XP pro doesn't? i suppose security is one of the main drivers for when a company upgrades operating systems on existing machines, as well as pricing structure for the licenses

I'm running the beta version of Vista on one of my harddrives, it's really nice to use. Still wish I could afford a mac though.

I'm with everyone else, my computer is 3 years old and can run vista no problems. Oh, and I paid 500 dollars for my computer, it's not even anything special. I don't see how this is gonna screw windows over. On a side note, I doubt I will ever use vista, I'll stick with XP until I get me a mac.

Another reason to run Mac OS X, an operating system with a major point release every year and a half or so.... also an extremely nice interface that doesn't require such an intense graphic card. Windows is resource hungry as it is, i would imagine microsoft would have only tried to alleviate this problem instead of making it more significant. A 7 year old machine still meets the OS X requirements, I can't even guess what kind of percentage of Windows running machines will not be capable to upgrade to Vista (SP4? SP5?).

a nice Vista PC costs 300 euros. So I don't see any problem in those specs.

Serriously they are not ahrd to find cheap at all. Granted this week you can only get a 160 for 44$ but about a month ago I bought 2 180s for about 45 each with no rebate.

Hell most companies still run 2000 so if we are using corporate installs to measure success then XP was a failure.

Ummm so having to pay more money every 6 months for a point upgrade that ads minor features is a plus.

You could consider SP 1 and 2 to be point releases that microsoft gave away for free.
