5 to 6 minutes is on the longer side for radio singles, but it's not unheard of. I know which comment you're talking about with regards to cutting out the solo. He also said that cutting out the intro was reasonable. If you cut out the intro and the outro with the clean guitars, boom, that's about a minute cut, and just the right length for radio.
