Ok after 5 listens including a drive tonight I have concluded that Cotillions is the most ‘beautiful’ record I have heard in at least 2 decades. It would be great if it got the recognition it deserves as it really is something special but of course that won’t happen in this day and age. And I am not just some fanboy. I strongly criticised the shiny bright album. But great to see Billy finally coming up with some late career magic.

In order to put my above comments in perspective and prove I am not just some fanboy jumping on the bandwagon this is what I said about Shiny when it came out:

Shiny is my least favourite smashing pumpkins / BC related album of all time and the only one that does absolutely nothing for me.

It’s sad because I know he is capable of so much more - I would even go as far as to say he is one of the best songwriters in modern music - but it’s like he’s not bothered anymore which is shocking for someone who was so wildly musically ambitious and willing to display their talents in the past.

I believe he is still talented as we have seen glimmers of it in all SP2 albums apart from this one. Brief moments where you say - ah there is the magic again! But on this album it’s as if he is purposely suppressing it due to stubbornness or even worse, laziness.

He can one million per cent write better music then this but for some reason he doesn’t want to or have the motivation to do so. I suppose you would be more motivated when you are living in a garage then when you are living in a million pound mansion

It really pains me to to join the Netphorian hordes and say these negative things about a band I love so much - and he doesn’t owe me or anybody good music - , he is an artist and can write what he wants, but this album is a crushing disappointment

all i'm seeing is ridiculous hyperbole in both directions lol

to me Shiny and Cotillions (and even Ogilala) show that Corgan's found his muse again. not to say it all works (there are real stinkers on all three) but t least these records feel like they were written by the SP1 Corgan my teenager self loved.

i think it has to do with the expansiveness of the melodies. TFE is basically the last SP1 album to my ears, but it started the trend of "more compact" melodies that more or less continued through monuments.

it wouldn't be a Smashing Pumpkins album without some branded tea and branded candle.

I noticed on YouTube, they put the Cotillions videos out under the Smashing Pumpkins channel. Lame

How dare Billy, who's been making music under the smashing pumpkins name for the last 3 decades, use the smashing pumpkins YouTube channel to promote his solo work. Not acceptable.

I was shocked too having been chosen to start a new thread I didn't want to do.

Was it for some later advises, how to get a free copy, to stop the thread...?

that's cause the chord progression is a little too similar

and yes, I take back what I said about the vocals. can't bear to listen to the whole thing because of them. the dropped consonants are everywhere (OUUU AND MEEE)

and like someone already said, this wouldn't be a problem if they weren't so high in the mix. he keeps doing it.

don't think I'll listen to it again
