Kenny is an absolute god among pocket drummers. (I in no way mean to pigeonhole him as merely a pocket drummer but holy shit he is incredible at that THING.) I think it makes sense that Billy sought Kenny out to play in the style of Adore because that music really needs a deep, tight consistent pocket almost like a drum machine. No one does that in rock music like Kenny! All hail the god of rock sidemen! I’m serious.
(In the words of Foolofatook, I get emotional about this stuff.) |

Right now the actual Kenny Aronoff is reading this forum thinking, “wow these people REALLY need help...and I worked for Corgan and Mellencamp.”

Wow what an embarrassing thread
Anyone seen the doc Hired Gun from a few years back? I wanna say I or someone else bought it up here. It's about hired backing musicians and has a great segment about Kenny and how he got his start. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4026034/ |

I still say that the baldness-factor played a significant hand in who he hired. It was the first new tour cycle that Billy went into while being completely bald as a cue-ball and he just so happens to hire 3 other musicians who are also completely bald as a cue-ball? Come on... We're talking about the guy Sharon Osborne says hired ugly people to be around him so he didn't look as ugly. Billy Corgan was one of the most image conscious musicians of the era. No way that shit is a coincidence. |

Just re-reading this thread now. For Netphoria historic purposes, it should be mentioned that Aronoff mentions in his book that Billy Corgan had instructed that he shave his head completely bald!!!
That is a fact! The theory has legs, folks. |

In that case, he hired Kenny first and asked him to shave his head second. So his baldness wouldn’t have played a part in him getting the gig. Thus, the theory has legs, one of which is gimpy.

He was already essentially completely bald aside from a little bit of the "George Costanza look" as Billy called it. Still would've worked perfectly for the bald look he was going for.

Hmm. Fair point. And maybe it was partly a case of bald man affirmative action. According to episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, this is totally a thing.

Haha exactly! That's a hilarious episode. Larry see's the guy out in public and he's wearing a toupee so he fires him.
Billy was as image conscientious as it came in those days, the bald look was definitely a statement or perhaps even used as a way to make his own baldness not stand out so much... But no way was it simply happenstance. |

It's easy to forget now, but all people ever talked about from about 96-98 was Billy's bald head. It was something always addressed in interviews and radio features... It probably pissed Billy off to no end and as we all know the bald head was simply a cover for his rapidly increasing hair-loss.
The Adore touring bands image was simply a tongue and cheek response to all of the previous hysteria... I assume Billy's mindset was something like "Oh yeah? It's a big deal that I'm bald is it? Here, get a load of Smashing Pumpkins now" |

The 90s was when it became "cool" for balding men to shave their heads completely.
Now, I would argue, it is "cool" for balding men to let it grow wild and free regardless (see indie men) I think Billy's bald head is actually off-trend now and he should let it grow wild and free as a matter of importance. |

There was some Atlanta show that was probably the best bootleg I’ve ever heard.
The drumming on pug and Ava adore were my favorite things. |

I always used to think Kenny seemed like kind of a wanker, but then I saw him in that hired hands documentary and he actually seems like a really cool guy.
