Interesting to see how critical Smashing Pumpkins fans are of vocals.

One might even say it is (literally) ironic.

even in Alanis speak it's not ironic, Pumpkins vocals were at one point unique & specially fitting for the music. now they are simply bad, at odds with the music, & a huge obstacle (inb4 ur dad's got a huge obstacle) to people actually enjoying the shit

but that's just one Joey's opinion!

yeah and we're not fans of shitty singing because his singing on SD etc was not shitty

fans of Cyr, however, complaining about vocals on any other thing, well yes, that would be ironic!

His vocals on Cyr are pretty decent overall. His worst vocal performance of all time will always be Solara. There was a song on Cotillions also where he sounded like a decrepit old woman too.

No. His vocals from Gish through FutureEmbrace were all good. Zeitgeist is when it started getting sketch.

So as of rite this second we have 38 of u rating it 4 or below vs 26 members rating it 6 or above

And 14 who are completely neutral

Somebody else who can do math tell us what this says about us, big willie, the world at large, and this record

the tide is turning, brother r2p

i predict a state of blessedness for the longsuffering riffraff of netphoria: billy & co will get hella high on hash bon bons and record an incredible shoegaze-dreampop-goth album with jeff/james on guitars, jack on bass, jimbo on drums (ofc) and billy vocals buried under the mix. a third of the album will feature katie's lead vocals while billy does interpretive dance.

I'm pretty happy with it. Definitely not what I was expecting at all, but I really dig the direction of some of it. Some of it doesn't really resonate with me, but I appreciate that they're still willing to take chances as a band.

My top 3 favorites: Minerva, Anno Santana, Cyr.

Would've liked to have heard more Jimmy and some guitar based stuff but hey, they're the artists! Who am i to oblige?

Did you check out the Cyr vid and get anything out of it? typical deep stuff from them symbolically.

I'm guessing the 33 songs he has for the trilogy thing could have some heavier material with it. I hear yet a different sound and direction with this effort, so they continue to be prog in that respect. hey caic...check your p.m. when you get the chance. later.

i wanted to listen to that 'swoon swoon' song. but whenever i heard that intro riff all i could think of is like, one of those funny gifs of skeletons dancing from shitty halloween movies.

that's how the whole record makes me feel

The album is really growing on me.

I couldn't stand any of the singles as they were released. I skipped through them the first time I listened to the album as a whole and didn't have any desire to listen to it again. Every song sounded the same. I thought this was probably the worst post-Machina material to date.

I waited a few days and gave it another listen. Then a few more days and another listen.

I think "first real album with James and Jimmy back" set my expectations for a rocker and they were certainly subverted.

I don't expect anyone else here to follow, but I thought I'd share what might be some strange form of early dementia.

I've had a similar experience. When COL and Cyr came out, I thought they were pretty much among the worst songs the band had ever released. But oddly enough, I warmed up to them over time. And each time I come back to the album, I feel like I understand it a little better, and therefore like it more. Same thing sort of happened with MTAE, but this album just has a steep listening process.

I've been into Minerva a lot lately.

Whatever spell this album briefly had over me has passed. Took 80 days.

Monuments did a similar thing. Purple Blood / SYT are the only real keepers. I'll probably return to it more than those just cos of the volume of tracks, but yeah, 30% of the album is straight trash, the rest are draped in a sheen of Corgan's patented song-ruining gloop.

It sounds like absolute ass on good headphones. No soundstage, flat, hot garbage. That's right, I'm an audiophile now. Soundstage. Bill needs to dig his voice a hole under it. Shiny sounded better.
