Default David Berman - Silver Jews and Purple Mountains thread

All 6 Silver Jews albums are worth listening to and have top notch songs to discover. I would recommend the first 3 albums in chronological order and then go from there. I heard Drag City started streaming in 2017 so perhaps they are on Spotify as well.

David returned from a 10 year hiatus and released the amazing Purple Mountains album this past July.

Here's a recent 58 minute podcast interview.

The Ringer article posted in the Purple Mountains thread.

His recent AMA.

I'm crushed and haven't been able to think clearly since finding out he past Tuesday night. Drag City announced it that afternoon but I had left work / wasn't reading the internet and had no idea. I was very much looking forward to seeing him for the first time (never thought it would be possible) and asking him permission to record the show. This really hurts. Not that the tour isn't happening but the fact that he is gone forever.

I'll post some very individual songs later and I hope others do the same. Had the opportunity to see Silver Jews and want to talk about it? Have a David story, interview or article to share? Live videos? Please do so if feel like doing so. Thank you.

Troubles, no troubles, on the line
And I can't stand to see you
I can't stand to see you when you're crying at home
Scotch and Penecilin, please try Carlton
a cold black maple hanger and husbands on the run
I just got back from a dream attack
that took me by suprise
and in there I met a lady her name was Shady Sides,
and she said
"It's been evening all day long,
It's been evening all day long
and how can something so old, be so wrong?"
Sin and gravity
drag me down to sleep to dream of trains across the sea
trains across the sea
half hours on earth, what are they worth?
I don't know
In 27 years I've drunk 50, 000 beers
and they just wash against me
like the sea into a pier

If you got a message
Leave your name and number
And we'll get back to you

Sleep on your back and ash in your shoes
And always use the old sense of the words
Your third drink will lead you astray
Wandering down the backstreets of the world

On the last day of your life
Don't forget to die
The things that you do
Will always make your mama cry.

Well, I know you got a lot of hope for
The new men
The new men

So you've got no friends and you wander through the night
And now you watch the sunrise through a rifle-sight
Well, don't believe in people who say it's all been done
They have time to talk because their race is run

So get in some licks
And hold your head up
And soon you'll be drinkin' from that crystal cup
Well, I know you got a lot of hope for
The new men

Well, I know you got a lot of hope for
The new men

Good morning to the new world

Just going to put some more links here for future reference.

Drag City's Eulogy - The label David had been on since 1994, all official releases of Silver Jews and Purple Mountains came from them.

Friends and Bandmates Reflect on the Life of David Berman - This is out of Nashville where David lived for nearly two decades to I'm looking forward to reading it.

The history of the film that documented Silver Jews’ earliest live shows - This contains present day talks with the producers of the documentary which was released in 2007. The article also has links to several interviews.

Thoughts from Marc Maron.

David Berman Saw the Source of American Sadness

At some point I want to listen to some of these but it's 5 hours worth of phone interviews so I'm not sure how much I can take in one sitting without breaking down like a brokenhearted fool.

Well I can stop posting in this thread now because someone (not me, I promise) started this Uncollected Writings of
David Cloud Berman
website.

I love that David would take the time to respond folks via postcard or email. This one hits really hard...

WHY? is one of my all time favorite bands and Yoni is one of my all time favorite musicians so this really means a lot!

WHY? is asking for donations.

I always looked up to ‪David Berman‬. His songs and his poetry book had a huge impact on me in my early career. His death was a staggering blow. We were only distant acquaintances but he somehow felt like a long lost half big brother or estranged uncle. I was a wreck for several days after I heard the news, listening to and reading all his work. Then I decided to learn “We Are Real” as a way to console myself. It was quite an emotional experience but sure enough it helped a lot to just sing his words out loud.

Listen to WHY?'s cover of We Are Real here: https://whywithaquestionmark.bandcam...ck/we-are-real

In honor of World Mental Health Day, all proceeds from this song will be sent to @afspnational and @musicares. Available now on @bandcamp, and 10/22 anywhere you stream music.

Many thanks to Lala Lala, Gabby's World - band, Grace Weir, Graham Marsh, Prescription PR, Big Hassle Media, and Joyful Noise Recordings for donating their time and effort to this cover.

That was posted today but shortly after David passed Yoni shared a post card he was sent...

Postcard Berman sent me in ‘05. Right when we got copies back from the manufacturer, I sent my new CD (Elephant Eyelash) to @dragcityrecords (the only address I had for my biggest musical hero) asking if they would pass it along to David. I didn’t hear back, and then maybe a month or 2 later, I received this post card in the mail. I knew it was from him right away. Postmarked from Nashville. The obscure(to me anyway) country singer on the front. That unmistakable chicken scratching. Oh my god people. I can not relay to you accurately just how huge this was for me. It blew my mind. My absolute favorite writer liked my album! Though the tour announcement hadn’t come out yet, I realized later, this postcard was his weird cryptic way of asking if we would open for the Joos on a few shows of their very first tour. Shortly after we got the official invitation from the booking agent. I was light years over the moon. The shows were very emotional. I cried a lot. On stage during our set and in the front row w my ex. Golly. Deep breaths. Here’s what the postcard says since it’s hard to read: “Yoni, This music you sent is really good. I’m surprised I haven’t been aware of something so new and exciting sounding to me. It makes me wonder what else I don’t know. Which makes me want time to figure it out. Best wishes Yoni. C U on the road. I’m going to tour inside a giant plastic San Diego Chargers helmet.” And then “MET LIFE” down the side. (?). PS I lived in the cottage behind that address 15 years ago. Please don’t bother the sweet old lady who lives there in the house.

Here's the original for reference:

Up the hill past 694, at the stone wall make a left,
and I will see you soon my friend if these old directions still direct.
Is the problem that we can't see or is it that the problem is beautiful to me?
The birds of Virginia are flying within you
and like background singers they all come in threes.
Won't soul music change
now that our souls have turned strange.
Once a day, twice a day...
And when on and off collide
we'll set our souls aside and walk away.
We've been raised on replicas of fake and winding roads
and day after day up on this beautiful stage
we've been playing tambourine for minimum wage
but we are real, I know we are real.
Repair is the dream of the broken thing.
Like a message broadcast on an overpass
all my favorite singers couldn't sing.
My ski vest has buttons like convenience store mirrors
and they help me see, that everything in this room right now is a part of me.
Won't soul music change
now that our souls have tured strange.
Once a day, twice a day...
And when on and off collide
we'll set our souls aside and walk away.
Realizing is how it feels inside when it happens to you.
So I took a shot of sugar like snow dumped into the blood
and children wander off into the ultra-economic
but we are real I know we are real.

Yesterday marked one year since David's exit. Some quotes from Cassie:

“I feel like David was a fireman who was going into the burning building to report back and explain what it felt like to be in the middle of that fire,” said his wife and former bandmate, Cassie Berman.

“‘Anytime that I’m talking about suicide,’” Cassie recalled him as saying, “‘remind me that there’s a lot of people out there who are encouraged that I came back from that attempt and made more records.’”

Edit: fricking wow, I'm the only person who has ever posted in this thread.

It's a cool, rainy Sunday. Perfect day for some Berman.
