It amuses me that all of these really artistically minded people came out of the woodwork and found each other in a city that had nothing going for it, right after a Sex Pistols gig.

Tony Wilson has an interview with Billy Corgan on youtube but since i'm on netphoria im assuming everyone knows that. I came across it by accident some years back.

bringin it "all back around" i know for a fact there was a james & bill interview from around the gish era where bill talks about mark e. smith

briefly, i guess "mention" would be a more accurate word, but i heard it a few years back and for whatever reason it was taken down

I can see why people like it so much, but I feel like everything that's done in this album is done better in a different Fall album.

hey elph - i started listening to the happy monday's discography at work today. made it through the first two albums. thoughts:

the first one is amazing.
the 2nd one has "better music" but the vocals aren't quite there for me.

so - round 1 - the first album is much better than the second.

Yeah I just discovered them a month ago or so and I have the same thoughts.

First album is straight post-punk reminds of The Clash but with the bass as the lead instrument.

I haven't really got into Bummed yet, but Pills+Thrills is also a great album, very different than the first though.

This song is so weird the melody sounds like something out of Black Sabbath song. I love it

okay i listened to the third album today "pills thrills..." from 1990

of note is the song "donovan" because i noticed, while watching interviews from 1992, he would often be accompanied by a woman identified as donovan's daughter.

my initial thoughts are that i like the singles better on this one. the instrumentals don't hit me as much as on the 2nd album (or the first for that matter) and it definitely sounds like that early 90s electronic pop, but the vocals and lyrics are much better than on the 2nd record, which in combination makes for better songs. Loose Fit is probably my favorite song here.

still does not top the intital intensity of the first record though. even though only 5 years have passed it sounds like 10 or more.

it's probably unfair, in that sense, to hang on to the first record so much, because part of the reason i'm drawn to it is that it really doesn't sound like "the happy mondays" at all. it reminds me more of james chance and that 2nd generation no wave sound like kid congo, etc from new york.

and as mentioned earlier it has that rowdy yet swinging, working class energy like early clash as well.

kind of like how !!!'s first record seemed really snotty and in your face, yet everything after that seemed more and more watered down.

also it's difficult not to think of this

who were doing this stuff since c.1985 as well. idk if you are familiar. some claim Gen invented H.A.R.D. (Heavy Acid Rock Dance - which overlapped into and predated "baggy") music as well as many other genres (industrial, english acid house, etc)
