Default Source of the terror threat: 4chan!

Quote:
NEWARK – The threat appeared on the Internet last month: "Dirty bombs" would be detonated this Sunday at Giants Stadium and six other football venues, it warned, in a coordinated attack that would make Osama bin Laden proud.

After an intensive nationwide probe, federal authorities announced Friday that a 20-year-old Wisconsin grocery store clerk has been charged with perpetrating a hoax that wasted valuable time and resources.

Jake J. Brahm, of Wauwatosa, Wis., surrendered to the U.S. Marshal's Service in Milwaukee on Friday morning after police received a tip that he was bragging about his exploits, said Christopher Christie, the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey.

"There is no evidence that Mr. Brahm had either the ability or the intention to deliver dirty bombs to any of these stadiums," Christie said at a news conference in Newark, where the criminal complaint was filed.

However, Christie said such messages -- which he called the Internet equivalent of shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theater -- could not go unpunished.

Brahm, who Christie said lives with his parents and had no prior criminal record, was charged with conveying false information or hoaxes threatening to damage buildings through the use of weapons of mass destruction and radiological dispersal devices. He faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

A federal magistrate in Milwaukee ordered Brahm released on his own recognizance Friday under the supervision of his father. Brahm cannot use the Internet or any computer that can be used to access it. His travel is restricted to within the Eastern District of Wisconsin and to and from New Jersey, as necessary. He was also required to surrender his passport.

"Brahm's unsportsmanlike conduct caused the United States to divert valuable resources from the real battle against those groups who toil in the shadows and laboratories and safe houses and in caves, secretly plotting genuine acts of terrorism," said Leslie G. Wiser, who heads the FBI's Newark office.

In addition to the East Rutherford stadium, home to the Giants and Jets, the posting said the radiological "dirty bombs" would be detonated in trucks this weekend at NFL stadiums in Atlanta, Cleveland, Houston, Miami, Oakland and Seattle.

Authorities said Brahm first posted the threat in mid-September on an Internet message board at www.4chan.org, warning that radiological fallout from simultaneous explosions would cause countless fatalities and trigger global consequences.

"Osama bin Laden will issue a video message claiming responsibility for what he dubs 'America's Hiroshima,' " the message said, in part. "In the aftermath, civil wars will erupt across the world, both in the Middle East and within the United States. Global economies will screech to a halt. General chaos will rule."

Christie declined to comment on a news report that the hoax was a result of a "writing duel" with a Texas man to see who could post the scariest threat on the Internet. However, he noted that Brahm had bragged about the stunt as it received more attention. Investigators had not determined a motive, he said.

Local police immediately contacted the FBI after receiving the tip, and agents interviewed Brahm Wednesday evening. Brahm admitted that he posted the threat about 40 times on the Web and that he knew it was false, the FBI said in a complaint. The message was then reposted by others.

Jake Joseph Brahm (born 1986) is an American musician and blogger. He attained notoriety when a post he made on the 4chan imageboard was interpreted as a terrorist threat by the Department of Homeland Security. The Department of Homeland Security warned the National Football League of this threat via a memo which was later leaked to the press.

Prior to the controversy, Brahm had been known as the drummer of Milwaukee indie pop outfit The Flying Party (misreported in the media as The Not This Atrium, a band Brahm was a member of in high school), and was also in the process of recording solo material, much of it with a confrontational or sardonic sense of humor. He had also at one point been a reviewer for indie music site Tiny Mix Tapes.

Brahm maintains several weblogs, most of them with a satirical bent. Amongst them is Jake Brahm Wangs Da Poo (a mock-serious record of his masturbation habits) and a mostly-fictional LiveJournal.

NFL Bomb Threat Controversy

On October 18, 2006 the Department of Homeland Security warned NFL officials in Miami, New York City, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Oakland, and Cleveland about a possible threat, which involved the simultaneous use of dirty bombs at stadiums in those cities. The threat claimed that the attack would be carried out on the day of October 22nd, the final day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security expressed doubt concerning the credibility of the threats.

On October 20, 2006, Brahm turned himself into federal authorities. He was charged with making a terrorist threat and was taken into custody by police. If convicted, he could face up to 5 years in prison, and a fine of up to $250,000.[1] Though the location and time of the threat's original posting is debatable, the threats came to light in the national media after they were repeatedly reposted on 4chan.org[2][3][4], when at that time, members of homeland security decided to spread the word of a threat. Upon alerting stadium officials, it was stated that the validity of the threats was not likely.
