Because where I come from this sort of performance isn't "hipster" but old-school.

I wasn't even born then.
Got to ask my family about salon soirees of the '50s, piano improvisations to literature readings, when it "started to be cool."

It started in 1997. It can be hit or miss now but when it hits it's better than it was in the beginning.

That excites him and he doesn't know where it will end up. It's very different from writing a song, then recording it, then touring and playing it every other night. If one thing goes wrong in a song like that, he can just move to the next chord and pretend everything's fine. I think taking that chance and not being afraid of failure is very cool. It is rekindling his initial fear of messing up in public. The 2000 United Center show, he messed up the words to Muzzle, but just kept going, and there was another 3 hours of show left, nobody cared at the end of the night that he flubbed the words to one song. With this experience, if he messes up something, it could be catastrophic.

When you're a musician and you are inexperienced, there is a real fear of failure that is exhilarating in a way. Then you learn from it, and learn how to handle mistakes. After you overcome that, it doesn't give you the same tension and thrill. There's no sense of danger. He's long since surpassed that feeling, but this brings a lot of that back. I think it's cool.

This wasn't a concert, SP or Billy, this was him getting excited about things again, and then channeling that into his actual songs and forthcoming albums. I guess a lot of people had other expectations.
The reasoning behind it is odd to say the least. I still think that this really does come down to him wanting to promote his shop as an art space and sell teas, and he has said as much the first time around when he did this. I don't know how Billy lost his fear of failure, it's not something that ever really goes away unless you're doing the same thing over and over again. I dunno, maybe Billy has been failing so long that he no longer fears it. Billy's body language is tough to read in these situations, he always looks insecure when he's not hiding behind a guitar. Most people really won't notice at all if he messes up, it's also hard to tell when it comes to noise music as it's not a type of music that most people are exposed to. I'm just not sure how this rekindles his sense of danger, especially since he has purposely set it up in his own tea shop where the majority of his fans and friends will show up. He's still safe in his own bubble. Now if he did a random free show in Chicago under an alias...that sounds much more effective in scaring the shit out of him.

Billy is doodling in public and there's an excitement he gets from it and is nice enough to let people in on the process. Again... pretty cool.
I think in this case you can, because Billy isn't a child and there is already a large body of work over the past several decades that have shaped noise music. But I could be bias because I just don't care much for the process, the process that any artist goes through is interesting but ultimately usually boring to watch. Watching a songwriters process is like watching a writers process, to me at least.

But what the hell, if he really believes it's working for him then so be it. I guess we'll find out when we hear the new songs.

Appearing for the 3rd time at Madame Zuzu’s as WPC, Billy put on a 3 ˝ hour show using poems by the Sufi poet Rumi as subtext for a continued exploration in modular synthesis.

Performed were: ‘Any Soul That Drank The Nectar,’ ‘All Through Eternity,’ 'I Was Dead,’ and ‘The Rubiyat Of Rumi.’

Also announced were plans to release a series of experimental recordings from 2007 (which will appear on a private press label sold through Zuzu’s), as well as the possibility of an extensive Siddhartha set offered for release later this year; in exclusive vinyl, collectors sets.

April Fools?

Now he's selling his own recording through the teashop...it really is only going to be a matter of time before he'll offer SP exclusives through his teashop, too.

And who the fuck would buy the Siddhartha set in vinyl and in a collectors set? I swear someone called that one. Might have been slunken.

It's too bad that the sort of person who would buy that wouldn't actually play it. Collectors edition, indeed.
