Just because something doesn't sound like SP doesn't automatically mean it sounds like Zwan. TFE didn't sound like Pumpkins, but it sure as hell didn't sound like Zwan either. Zwan had their own sound, and Tarantula clearly doesn't fit into it.

I'll just simply say that you are allowed to have a different opinion. I don't hear the sp sound.
I'm not saying the actual riffs. I'm saying the guitar sounds are similar to that on those MCIS songs, as opposed to how guitars sounded on Adore, Machina, etc. The actual style of the song, though, could have been written for anything I suppose. If the tonality wasn't what you were talking about, my bad.

Anyway, the guitar sound and tone on each SP album has been different so far. So I don't see your point.

the song flows so poorly. thats why everyone is saying it's cluttered. it's a fucking three ring circus. not that it's not hilariously awesome... but corgan wrote such tight songs in the past. this is just a vehicle for van halen solos, confederate flags, naked breasts, pyrotechnics, and "lies burnt off your soul" jokes.

The song kicks ass. That fucking groove is undeniable, it almost has a Johnny Cash meets Pantera vibe if you know what I mean. The song definitely reaches its peak around 1:30 when that first guitar solo is slain, and then the fucking awesome line "a million watts of sound can't compare". This is big hit material I think, the only potential problem I see is the lack of a decipherable, sing-along chorus. There are some equally progressive songs out there on the radio though, the White Stripes' new offering "Icky Thump" for example, so who knows? I hope the masses eat this shit up and put the Pumpkins back on top. Since Billy just released the best rock song out onto the radio in ages, he deserves it.

i thought it was pretty fucken sick. perfect single for the new era pumpkins i think. Its got the pop but they do rock hard you cant deny it. As far as it being crammed I think live theyll have a great song to rock with instead of all these layered solos/vocals at the same time. the bridge at 0:40 and a few other parts similar i think bug me those fucken vocals are too lame for the craziness underneath. anyhow. good stuff over all! IM PSYCHED.

Wow, corganist replied to me. Fucker usually takes the high road.

Once again, all I said was that it wasn't pumpkins sounding at all. He got rid of the early zwan songs because they sounded too "pumpkins", and now he gives us a song that isn't "pumpkins". If jimmy weren't there, it wouldn't even have that going for it.

It might as well have been a zwan song. It COULD have been written for them, since it sure as hell wasn't written with sp in mind. In fact, i'm sure he was just trying to write a radio friendly single, regardless if it sounded like sp or not.

Just listened again. It is great. Only gripe being that maybe the 'quiet' break bit could have gone on a bit longer, maybe as an outro. That bit held a lot of potential but seems they cut it short for radio?

Still don't understand the Zwan comparison. It's much darker and heavier than anything we got from Zwan.

They didn't want to sound to much like the old pumpkins where their "soft" parts would last minutes, and not seconds.

the silent bit sounds a bit crammed in, it was a mistake to add it i think. well it's still a nifty little tune.

The lyrics seem a little mixed up. I think he is referring to a relationship at first, but then later it seems he is talking about himself/3rd person stuff. But they seem more of a stream of conscious way that is more reminiscent of TFE. But there is a few metaphoric/poetic lines thrown in as well. Seems to pale in comparison to most SP lyrics, but then I'll judge that better when I see them on paper.

Default The beginning of Tarantula sounds like Pastichio Medley @ 7:08

What song is it?

Tarantula is indeed very Mellon Collie and that is so awesome.

I'm not even making a zwan "sound" comparison. All i'm saying is that if he had such a beef with "the empty sea" and other early zwan songs because they sounded like "sp", and then he goes and makes this. Something that isn't even anywhere near the old sound. He might as well have written if for zwan.

The lyrics fit.

I semi-agree with you, but also disagree. I don't really know. It definitely took me by surprise... it rocks more than I thought it would. I see what you're saying about the guitar solos sounding as contrived as the Untitled solos, but actually, I think the solos in Tarantula work a lot better.

Billy's mixed up the person-perspective his entire career... half his songs start with "I" and end with "They." It's just how he writes.
