The idea of race was pretty much invented when biologists took their hard-ons for categorizing all the plants and animals and applied the same concepts to humans, which scientifically doesn't work, but the idea got perpetuated long enough we're still stuck with it today. All "race" tells us is that people who live nearby look the same, people from far away look different. Isolated gene pools, that's all it is.

Well the thing is there are no defined races. If you look at the U.S. census for example there has never been a census taken with the same set of race options as the previous one. I mean, that's largely cultural of course but nobody really knows how many races there actually are because there's no real basis for it anyway.
