Question UPDATE: Netphoria Shiny and Oh So Bright Review

Well I said I'd re-run this poll after the album had been out for a few weeks.

Now that you've had time to listen to it, digest it and live with it, what are your thoughts?

I gave it quite a high rating at first listen due to optimism, but in retrospect I've changed my view. I judged it against post-2000 work (and gave it 7/10). Compared to anything Machina and before naturally it's going to come off poorly.

Anyway, last time Netphoria rated it as a distinctly average album (most ratings 5/10 or below). But is it going to stay that way or move into truly dreadful territory, or has anyone grown to love it more?

I like it more but alienation and seek absolutely destroy it. But my optimism is still there, I hear some rays of hope in some of the songwriting I haven’t heard in a long, long time.

Looks like Kahlo dropped from a 7 to a 3.

I like it the same. I thought I heated Seek and Destroy, but I only hate the punk pop main chorus. I like the production they went for with Alienation nice vibe to the song, I feel like it could be used on a sci-fi TV show – the problem is the song goes nowhere.

The biggest problem for me is that Is really hard to connect to Billy's lyrics nowadays. It doesn't matter if they are well written, it lacks that personal feeling – he did a better job on that with Ogilala.

Funny enough, there's a famous-ish Brazilian YouTuber that talks about music, and he reviewed the album. I was checking the comments and they are shockingly positive. Some people saying they never paid much attention to the band and started listening to their albums after the review. They loved the Shiny and are now listening to the rest of the catalogue.

A few other people saying "Guns n roses owes a reunion album as good as this one", "it's on my top 3 best 2018 albums", "their best since MCIS", "best rock album of 2018"!

WTF

there is a distinct lack of actual riffs on this album. like, it's all just strummed chords/power chords. where are the riffs? i guess silvery kinda has one. and seek, sort of. but there's nothing like even stuff on monuments, let alone any of the other albums

I don't remember what I said previously, but my opinion is about the same. I voted 6/10 here, slightly above average.

What has changed for me is that since the release, I went back to and listened to the other SP2 albums (wow, yes, even TGBK), and changed my opinion on some stuff. Oceania is not as good as I used to think... I would probably rate it the same as Shiny now. The standard release of Zeitgeist is still worse than Shiny, but if you listen to the complete tracklisting, I think that pushed Zeitgeist up from about a 5/10 to a 7/10, which actually makes it clearly the best SP2 album. Just depends if you count those extra tracks.

Shiny is still much better than Monuments though, and MUCH better than TGBK which seriously sounds like Billy having a total mental breakdown

i'm never going to rate SP2 shit against SP1. I'm just not, there's no point. They're practically two different bands altogether for me, one that just happens to also play the SP1 material at shows. If I rated this again Siamese, Mellon Collie etc it'd be like a 2. as a record going up against only the SP2 material it's between 6 & 7

I listened to the album about 20 times initially, really trying to give it a fair shake and I just wasn't feeling it at all . I figured that if I took a break for a couple of weeks and then revisited it that it might click but I actually ended up liking it less.

Total swing and a miss. Aside from Silvery, I don't like it at all. I deleted everything but Silvery... Over and done with for me.
