When drums and cymbols lose their dynamics this is what you get.

it's fascinating how everything bill does gets worse and worse

imagining how much worse he can get is hard to do, but i look forward to the journey

Imagine how awful it would be if Billy released a full album of Journey covers.

That might actually be the best thing since Zwan.

Knights of Malta - 3/5 How the fuck does Billy get away with adding these backing vocals?? Still, the positivity feels genuine, nice groove, great little guitar bursts and the gospel is good.

Silvery - 4/5 just a very solid tune with absolutely no cringe

Solara - 2/5 still as shit as the day it came out

Travels - 3/5 We've all heard this song before, Billy has done this vocal melody a million times so it's a little played out but still pleasant

Alienation 2/5 there's some nice flourishes here and there but this is a drawn out slog and does nothing for me

With Sympathy - 2/5 the components of a good song are there in the chords, but it doesn't develop into anything

Marchin On - 2/5 If it had a ripping chorus akin to The Everlasting Gaze it would be great, but it's one dimensional Zeitgeist tone kills it for me

Seek and You Shall Destroy 1/5 - Sounds like someone (Billy?) thought it would be cool to have a song called Seek and You Shall Destroy and then tried to write a song called that. Just a pointless waste of everyone involved's time and talent.

Summary - Poor. What you would expect from a group who spent next to no time trying to knock together some songs. Big regression from Ogilala which gave me hope that Billy had moved on from trying to resurrect his 30 year old self and write big rock songs, which is what he seems to think SP should be all about.

I hate to say it but Solara is growing on me.
Might be my favourite song on the LP.
Sounds good on big speakers.
I'm sorry.

In the context of the album, solaras not as bad as i initially felt. It’s just there, it’s ok i guess

The tru failure of solara was its hilarious inability to shoulder the burden of being the comeback single from a certain group of very special dudes recording together again for the 1st time in nearly two decades

the pitchfork review is actually quite terrible and self-important, as many pitchfork reviews have been.

Yes let me go on record that the criteria applied by that pitchfork reviewer cemented more fully than ever my desire to punch pitchfork in the (tiny/hard) dick

solara's job seems to be simply to close side A with more of a bang...

It's only self important in that bothered reviewing it.

I’m surprised Pitchfork even reviewed it. They normally only review things relevant in 2018

Saying that, I agree with most of their review but it’s still a 6.5/10 for me

The pitchfork review was good and hit all major points as to why SosB isn’t that great.

oh it made one point about lyrics...
otherwise it just repeats over and over that there is nothing to be found on the album, while talking about past albums.

Don’t be mad because a bad review makes you second guess liking an album. Perhaps you should have more confidence in your beliefs.

What seemed most objectively correct in the pitchfork review is that the lyrics are like some numerical code that is indecipherable to humans. They read like the random sentences you can create on this website https://www.textfixer.com/tools/random-sentences.php . Billy's lyrics have always been cryptic, but I could attach some meaning, and it was kind of fun to do, but reading/listening to the lyrics of the SosB, I can't make jack shit out of almost any of it. It does kind of remind me of brain tumor-like behavior, before John McCain came out publicly that he had brain cancer, and he was saying some things that had people scratching their heads. Billy is lucid in interviews, but his lyrical side has gone completely nuts.

Like I said recently, he has become incredibly formulaic in his lyrics. All songs now have lyrics that are either oh baby let's rock yeah yeah come on, or they go for this infantile storybook kind of psuedo-spiritual mumbo jumbo

"This kind of terminal vacancy has spread like blight in Corgan’s songwriting—2014’s Monuments to an Elegy had a similar woolly blankness, a self-erasing anonymity that seemed to proceed from the assumption that if Corgan stood as still as possible, maybe no one would notice him on the radio and kick him off."

I hate Pitchfork but that is painfully accurate.

at least Pitchfork attempted an actual review & not some half-assed "snarky malarky" portrayed through a Billy Corgan phone call or something

actually, i could use a good sarcastic Bill Corgan phone call skit right about now; damnit Pitfork!
