Default Bands Other than SP that You Have a Love/Hate Relationship With

Maybe this belongs in the general music forum, but I was just wondering if any of you have a fandom with a band that is akin to your SP fandom. I don't think I'm going out on a limb here by saying that most people on this board have something of a love/hate relationship with SP. Most of us love the old stuff (like, obsessively), but we generally hate at least some (or maybe most) of the newer material and I think we almost ALL hate the kind of person Billy has become in the last 20 years.

My question is, are there other bands you regard like this? I can't think of any myself. Generally, if I like a band but then they stop putting out material I like, I kind of move on and just revisit the old stuff. And as for how the musicians themselves are as people... I guess I don't pay enough attention to their personal lives all that much. I mean, if it comes out that some singer/guitarist/etc. abuses women or is a racist or loves Trump, then I'm fucking done with them. But typically if they keep a low profile and don't do anything horrible to anyone, I don't grow to despise them even if their new music sucks.

Are there other bands out there that you have a love/hate relationship with?

I've thought about this occasionally and my answer is: not really

There are certain bands I like who started making music I didn't really get into as much, but I didn't start hating them as people or anything - and even with the music thing, it's not like they were in this hopeless territory where you hardly even had a glimpse of the songwriter/musician/whatever they used to be. Billy is like an entirely different person in that regard, this is not the guy who made Siamese Dream

Marilyn Manson as a band by and large has stopped existing for me. Most of what has been released since 2007 has made me understand that he would never have gone anywhere without the musicians around him backing him up. He's become a washed up wetbrained alcoholic parody of himself that disappoints me as a person and an artist. Sometimes he can still crank out a good tune, but it's rare.

Bill disappoints me only in that I know he can write better music, but doesn't because he's content to rest on his laurels and put out unchallenging-if-still-sometimes-catchy-music. He can still be a snarky and sarcastic douche, but by and large he seems to have owned up to a lot of his mistakes and fixed some bridges while burning others.

Yeah, I would agree that Billy does seem like a totally different person than the guy who made Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie. I mean, he was probably a jerk back then too but some of the things he's said and done in the past decade just make him seem so vile. And the music he's making now, on the whole, is just trash. I'm not sure if it's a lack of effort or if he really just doesn't know how to create good music anymore but either way, it's depressing.

Manson is an interesting entry... I wouldn't go so far as to say I've ever hated the guy but I would agree that in many ways, he does feel like a parody of his old self.

Weezer, I guess, but unlike Billy, Rivers manages to still be charming even as he becomes a complete self-parody.

Modest Mouse aggravates me with how hard they leaned into the Float On sound, but they IB is very transparent about his intentions (he’s taking the money every time).

I don't think there is another band I have followed closely enough to be severely disappointed with their newer input. I'll check out a band, listen to some albums, and go "oh, I like this one; that one, not so much." There have been bands that I've followed who have released disappointing albums (Cursive's I am Gemini comes to mind), but a single bad album just kinda makes me go "lame" and toss it aside after I've listened to it once.

As for personalities, I know very little about the personal lives of musicians, their views, or their personalities. I don't follow the lore surrounding the bands. I only really know their music. I probably listen to so many people who are terrible. Only one that comes to mind is Morrisey. I never even sought out information on his views or attitudes, he's just loud enough that you'll hear about them anyway.

Yeah I think besides Weezer, there aren't too many bands that have such contempt for their fans and what the fans want.

There are plenty of bands that I wished toured more or just worked harder (cough MBV cough), but its hardly in the same category.

The Eagles, tons of great music, legendary, but Don Henley is greedy as fuck, and a real downer of a person. Glenn Frey had a huge ego (not as big as Billy's, but the stakes were higher), I love Don Felder as a guitarist, but he had zero musical ambition outside of being in the band, so he just dropped off the map when the band was on hiatus. Walsh and Schmidt play the same avoidance game as Chamberlain. But their catalog is filled with so many killer songs.

Also Chicago, a lot of great music, but most of the band members are overly acrimonious an unlikable, with the sole exception of Robert Lamm.

I do hate Lars Ulrich as person though.

I never loved Metallica on the same level as SP, but seeing behind the curtain still made me sick.

i'll second what he said

they should tour more & release more music. even if it's not under MBV or whatever

actually, i'll say the exact same for another band who have done like 1 thing in the past 30 years: STONE ROSES

Yeah, I was never a huge Metallica fan but I used to like them quite a bit and the whole Napster thing just made me hate them. Well that, and St. Anger.

I love Failure just as much, but I find them to be pretty great people that release consistently good music. The almost 20 year hiatus worked for them when they needed to grow/clean up and they make it a point to show love to their fans. SP only has a slight edge because their old catalog has more sonic diversity, or Failure would replace them as my "favorite."

I've been extremely passionate about many bands, musicians, and artists. But none of them have managed to elicit such hatred from me as SP.

It really is a love/hate thing though. I think Billy is supremely talented and I am compassionate to the fact that he was severely abused in his family of origin. But I still can't help but be disgusted by his behavior, and I do think that his work has been in decline since about 1999.

D'Arcy hit the nail on the head on Facebook this year when she said something to the effect of "I used to keep Billy's ego in check. But by the time I left the band, it was impossible."

It's just super disappointing and embittering to see how he has ended up. I've never seen someone so talented (and afforded so many opportunities) fail so spectacularly for such an extended period of time. It's like watching Mike Tyson take a big dump in the middle of the ring every time Billy starts a new project. There's always a big build up where it looks like he's going to be the knockout kid again. We all get excited and can't wait for the big fight. And then...oh wow, he's just taking a big shit on pay-per-view again. Great. Loss by TKO!

Then we get the excuses:

"I AM PURPOSELY TAKING A SHIT IN THE RING TO PLAY WITH YOUR EXPECTATIONS."

"I THREW THE FIGHT BECAUSE OF THE BRITNEYS OF THE WORLD."

"YOU THINK I CAN'T FIGHT ANYMORE? I JUST DON'T WANT TO. I AM USING MYSELF AS A BATTERING RAM TO CHALLENGE YOUR ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT WHAT A FIGHT IS SUPPOSED TO BE."

Blah blah blah. And all I wanted was to watch the most talented fighter of a generation kick some ass.

People like to say that Billy's change in musical direction is somehow tied to his ego, but the truth is most musicians fizzle out by their 30's. A lot of the legends who died in their late 20's are cast in a good light because they never had the chance to release a dozen shitty albums and ruin their sterling image.

I've maintained that Billy's music is not bad, and that a lot of the hatred of his music has more to do with tying together the fact that he's an asshole along with the fact that he writes happier sounding music, and to see the assertion that his failure is somehow due to the fact that D'arcy couldn't rein him in, or that he wouldn't accept outside criticism, is false, especially considering that we know he has been a one man show from the very beginning.

Hmmmm, arcade fire, almost

Last record was garbage and win butlers sanctimonious messiah attitude has always been generally insufferable. Plus when they stole that kids basketball

Great thread idea

Everything Now is so bad it's hard to accept. I can't even think of another instance of a band going on such an incredible four album run and then nose-diving like that

it's so weird because especially with the second half of Reflektor, I felt them just going so dark and weird and evolving, and then what they spit out next was like their version of Teargarden

Although I've never been as invested in his music. There seem to be some serious parallels though. That whole War on Drugs thing was seriously embarrassing
