...Ulmo bore up Elwing out of the waves, and he gave her the likeness of a great white bird, and upon her breast there shone as a star the Silmaril, as she flew over the water to seek Earendil her beloved. On a time of night Earendil at the helm of his ship saw her come towards him, as a white cloud exceeding swift beneath the moon, as a star over the sea moving in strange course, a pale flame on wings of storm.
-Of the Voyage of Earendil

'Hail Earendil, of mariners most renowned, the looked for that cometh at unawares, the longed for that cometh beyond hope! Hail Earendil, bearer of light before the Sun and Moon! Splendour of the Children of Earth, star in the darkness, jewel in the sunset, radiant in the morning!'
-Of the Voyage of Earendil

Three cheers for Earendil, the famous sailor. The dude that shows up when you least expect him to. The dude that comes through only once you've given up on him. Hip hip hooray, Earendil, the dude that carries some sort of light at various times of the day. On the upper end of the scale as far as humans go, bright at night time, bright in the evening, and also bright at pretty much any other time including morning.

Where can I get this book? Sounds amazing.

Forget Ancalagon. You wanted originality? Here is Tolkien's Venus myth:

Now fair and marvellous was that vessel made, and it was filled with a wavering flame, pure and bright; and Earendil the Mariner sat at the helm, glistening with dust of elven-gems, and the Silmaril was bound upon his brow. Far he journeyed in that ship, even into the starless voids; but most often was he seen at morning or at evening, glimmering in sunrise or in sunset, as he came back to Valinor from voyages beyond the confines of the world.

You listen to doom metal but you cannot appreciate the heaviest of all recondite tomes? Shame on you buzzard, shame on you!

The ship was well-designed and built to a pretty high standard, being lit throughout like a McDonald's location; and Earendil, the dude that's also associated with brightness in general, captained the entire thing in a costume typically associated with late eighties hair metal along with some titular shit on his forehead. He sailed fairly significant distances in that ship, not excluding weird voyages into blank space; but he was most often seen at two distinct and also fairly ambiguously defined parts of the day, always emitting some level of luminescence, as he returned to a place called Valinor from a trip that anybody else would think of as beyond the capabilities of a boat and not technically even sailing.

Awful. Awful stuff.

This is where Buzzard reveals, to the astonishment of all, that he is in fact an ardent Tolkien enthusiast.

For the Dunedain held that even mortal men, if so blessed, might look upon other times than those of their bodies' life; and they longed ever to escape from the shadows of their exile and to see in some fashion the light that dies not; for the sorrow of the thought of death had pursued them over the deeps of the sea. Thus it was that great mariners among them would still search the empty seas, hoping to come upon the isle of Meneltarma, and there to see a vision of things that were. But they found it not.

Omfg!!! I am reading the Hainish cycle by URSULA K LE GUIN SUPREME MISTRESS OF FANTASTIC FICTION

Just started Roccanon's World and I can't put it down. The intro chapter was ubersenescent. This lady is super depressed because her family is so poor that she couldn't bring her lord a proper dowry in marriage. (They are a bronze age culture). so she goes to find this necklace Eye of the Sea a massive sapphire set in gold that was stolen from her ancestors. she gets tricked into taking an eight light year trip (one way) to a super advanced world that has a museum that collects artifacts. they give her the Eye. She returns and finds out that 17 years have passed her baby daughter is the same age as she is and her husband is long dead. freaks out and kills herself.

BOOM: URSULA PREVAILS

I think it depends on what you mean by immortal. Like Gandalf or Sauron, the Balrogs would have had Maiar spirits at the cores of their being, and those spirits are probably immortal (this is just my guess but it does seem likely given Tolkien's Christian-like mythos and the fact that Eru himself created the Maiar... they are probably indestructible or if they were possible to destroy, it would be some kind of heinous act against god and the universe... remember even Morgoth wasn't killed, he was just cast out of this world). Their bodies, however strong, were still vulnerable, biological, mortal vessels. The Balrog that fell with Gandalf died, right? And I'm pretty sure at the battle of Gondolin some Balrogs were killed as the survivors fled through that secret passage.

Damn rbg you are erudite in tolkienic lore.

yeah as maiar clearly balrogs are immortal beings of flame like mini-melkors though their bodies can be destroyed (ecthelion, glorfindel and mithrandir take them out).

so even if say some day i stumble upon buzzard having a guinness in a pub watching a cricket match with george rr martin and i set martins beard afire and they both die from smoke inhalation buzzards immortal spirit of flame shall endure within the confines of arda.

Rbg have you read Ursula Le Guin. She is the absolute best. The Left Hand of Darkness is lightyears above any other fantasy story that I have read.

(It was fun to reread the machine stops btw. the homeless inherit the earth! Heh)

Weird similarities between you and my Dad

Called Johnny by family members
Old Testament Scholar for a Dad
Enjoy reading Tolkien and Ursula Le Guin (my Dad sent us an Ursula Le Guin book for us to read just this year. I still haven't looked at it.)
Hate the church after growing up in it and witnessing first hand the dark side - the pettiness and hypocrisy. And yet can't shake the values of selflessness and service to others, leading to a deep-seated, secret contempt for others who are not burdened with the same ethos, and an even deeper-seated contempt for themselves, for having contempt for others.
Lived in near poverty despite having college degrees and a family with deep pockets

If you lose your salon quality hair, start listening to Shostakovich and Mahler and reading Philip Larkin I fear there will be some kind of implosion
