I agree with whatcolor. In a capitalist country, people protest with their dollars. It's why some people don't shop at Walmart. If you don't agree with the politics or actions of any band, actor, entity, corporation, the most effective way to put them down is to not buy their shit.
I don't shop at Walmart, but that doesn't mean I have to patronize every business that isn't offensive to me. |

and it's probably useful to point out that not shopping at walmart doesn't mean that walmart doesn't stock items that you might otherwise enjoy. it's just that one's tastes sometimes have to take a backseat to one's principles.
this "the band's actions makes you change your tastes" argument is just silly |

I don't know, guys. I kind of still think that you're saying that you're going to do something based on an idea and then rejecting the basic premise of that idea, itself. And tastes should take a backseat to principles, but over things that are actually important and related to the quality or effects of the product that you're boycotting.
Otherwise, you're just undermining something potentially good to make the point that you have control and can damage anybody who creates anything and who you happen to dislike. In that kind of situation, boycotts stop being effective tools because they're used indiscriminately, or over something that isn't even fully substantiated. All you wind up with is a business driven by obsessive marketing and deceitful spin instead of good products (sound familiar?), because you've sent the message that you're willing to act capriciously. If you don't like the person's choices, condemn their choices. Character-assassinate them, if you want. But don't set the precedent of screwing up the creation of something that is in itself good unless it's absolutely necessary. |
