Default Shit Recently Bought Thread

Can be anything. A new vinyl LP. Groceries. Medication. Tires. Whatever. You paid your hard-earned money for it, so post about it here!

Last week I ordered King of the Hill Season 3 on DVD from eBay and the original Omen stelbook DVD from the Amazon Marketplace.

The KOTH set was a nice deal, but it's three flipper discs with only three episodes on each side, which I find weird but whatever. I only own 1 & 2 and I haven't seen any other episodes in at least 7 years. Can't wait to dig in.

The Omen is an all-time great and I already owned the bare-bones DVD. The steelbook was only $2 and I'm a sucker for gimmicky packaging like that. The seller didn't pack it with bubble-wrap, so it arrived with a huge fucking dent in the back that I had to straighten out with a hammer, my kitchen counter and a little patience. I'm definitely leaving some negative feedback on that fucker.

How about you, what'd YOU buy recently?

I just bought a black sleeveless knee length cocktail dress off Etsy. I'll take a pick of it when it shows up.

I bought a sewing machine a few weeks ago but haven't used it yet. So today I bought a Simplicity pattern for a skater skirt

Ridley Scott is so inconsistent that I'm beginning to think films like Alien and Blade Runner were just dumb luck.

Alien: Covfefe could've been directed by Paul W.S. Anderson or Len Wiseman as far as I can tell.

I tried to buy the first Song of Ice and Fire book, but found it to be just slightly more expensive than I wanted to invest, so I didn't buy it.

A little bit of both. My mom is a big spender and I more or less took over the weekly grocery purchasing decisions to try and shop smarter...

Weekly bill went down from around 400 reais to 250... which is something.

I need to buy either a TV or a computer. Or maybe a smart TV. Or a better smart phone. What's the best way to get on the internet all the time? Laptops always break >.<

i bought this book for like $55 dollars

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....4,203,200_.jpg

and this one for like $15
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....4,203,200_.jpg

my thesis professor lent me his copy of the first one but i dont want to mark it up. $55 is a lot for me right now but i need to highlight. it's an amazing book that includes both the authors' hypotheses and the previous literature they are based on. even though it's almost 30 years old it is still the most popular evolutionary view of social intelligence in primates. it's kind of blowing my mind honestly. today i read some very good evidence that, contrary to the idea that complex social intelligence is an extension or elaboration of 'object intelligence' (or intelligence in manipulating food and objects), social intelligence is actually a pre-requisite to advanced cognition and not the product of it.

the second book has a framework of classifying deceptive acts that i am using for my paper. i have a pdf and used that to summarize some ideas but I want to read the whole book. since you are now undoubtedly at the edge of your seats, here's part of the summary

Quote:
Broadly, the reasons people are deceptive in everyday life seem to follow just a few general themes (DePaulo et al., 1996; add more). Although I will be discussing modern examples later in this paper, the roots of deception are phylogenetically ancient, and the reasons people deceive are presumably not different than the reasons people have always deceived, and in many cases, are not all that different than the way other organisms deceive. Mitchell (1986) has created a framework to conceptualize deceptive behaviors based on qualitative differences and level of sophistication required to perform each deception. Each of his four levels builds upon the sophistications of the previous level(s). His four levels of deception and examples are as follows (Mitchell, 1986):
1. Deceptive acts performed by an animal evolutionarily programmed to act in a certain way (“always do p”), e.g., animals that blend in naturally with their habitats.
2. Deceptive acts performed by an animal evolutionarily programmed to act in a certain way in a certain condition (“do p given that q is so”), e.g., animals that mimic other animals to avoid predators or intra-species competition.
3. Deceptive acts found to be advantageous through experience that are performed voluntarily based on previous reinforcement and not an intention to deceive per se ("do any p given that p resulted in q in your past"), e.g., a dog that has learned that acting injured gets it more human affection.
4. Deceptive acts intended to deceive based on past experience and specific knowledge of a target of deception, requiring self-awareness and an ability to self-correct (“self-programmed” deception). For example, a chimpanzee that purposefully moves away from food it has hidden and only returns to it once other chimpanzees have ceased observing it.

Evolution really let the mosquitoes down with that noise they're still making.

I've based my documentary series on Shine TV around that point.
