Speaking of his voice. He said he thinks that "Wound" is the most underappreciated song of the Machina era. Well, Billy, I know that I for one would have appreciated that song more if your vocal performance didn't remind me of the sound an infant makes when it's being stabbed to death.

looking back Machina singing had some real red flags of what was to come.

Well he's never said it. He's never said "I know I sing differently now, and the reason is X".

It's been different, markedly, since Zwan. Even comparing Zwan to Machina II, what, three years apart? The difference in how he sang and how his voice was produced is huge. And, a few exceptions aside, he hasn't gone back to his old way of singing.

The key to this is understanding what caused him to change between 2000 - 2003.

He was trying to recapture his popularity and be a pop singer like Bono, he thought singing tuition would make his voice sound better?

Once he learned the new techniques he felt his vocals were better regardless of what the old SP fans thought. So pride, arrogance and stubbornness, at a guess.

If he was damaging his vocal cords the old way he could tell us that and we’d all lay off him a little.
Having said that he sounded great on the 2007 tour but like shit on the ZG record, so I sway towards it being an artistic choice.

The seeds for the big "pro singer" vocal technique changes and whatnot were planted during the Adore era tho, weren't they? Guess they didn't quite take over until after the break-up of SP 1, but yeah. I always figured "finding God" had something to do with it as well. You're just not going to sing a song like Zero the same way as a practicing Christian

To be fair with his singing, he can hit notes way more successfully now than the early 90s - case in point, all those performances of Mayo where he can’t get to the higher notes at the end at all and his voice cracks up. The trade of for this is the awful vibrato etc that’s definitely a “learnt” thing he thinks sounds good.

The lack of screaming is a bit of a bummer for this tour, I hope it’s not permenant and is more to do with playing 3hrs a night and not wanting to burn his voice out.

Glad I'm not alone in thinking this. I see praise for that song sometimes and I think it might actually have been a decent track if Billy didn't sound all "THHHHHAAAAAAA YOU WAAAAAAA AAAASS YOUU ALWAAAAYS WAAAAAAAAA!"
