Machina wasn't a flop, but it was a definite disappointment by SP standards. They were hoping to bounce back after Adore and see if they could get their sales up again and it sold even less than Adore.

While the sales would've been seen as a success for other major label acts, it was a disappointment as far as Smashing Pumpkins were concerned.

I think artists only need to sell a few ten thousand copies to be considered a hit nowadays.

If that shit affected late 90s/early 00s sales it was marginally if at all - main thing it did was nix the worth of singles (to the buying public, not as a collector's item)

adore was disappointing. it sold way less than they hoped for but at least had genuine hit single. machina had nothing. the response was lukewarm and the album sold based on the strenght of previous success, generating no traction of its own. it was a depressing ending and probably the reason we got a greatest hits so quick - to go out with a sure bang and not on such a low note. so yes, a flop. and billy is still butthurt over it.

On for a remix but not a re-record. Guitar maybe, certainly not vocals. Not the way he sings now.

I look forward to hearing the digitally remastered Machina II sometime in 2087.

One complaint I don't have about Machina I is the artwork. I loved all of it.

Yeah, the idea of doing completely new artwork kinda bugs me as well. I liked how the other reissues featured variations or expansions of the original art. The Machina artwork was beautiful. If you completely removed that, it's almost like taking a piece of that albumís identity away.

I believe he wants the 'story' to be easier to follow. The artwork was great but not easily accessible. And it sounds like what he wants to record is new pieces to help tie the story together. I don't have a problem with either of these ideas seeing as he wants to completely repackage the whole thing, essentially making the album 'proper'

Sounds to me like he's talking about helping existing tracks segue together better, and/or maybe he does want to go through with doing the faux "live concert" that's part of the narrative and needs to add proper effects for that.

Yeah, I agree. Though I can also see SlingeroGuitaro's point; he probably views Machina as an unfinished album since the label wouldn't let him release the whole thing and because of that, the story behind it was incredibly difficult for people to follow (though to be fair, I've listened to all the Machina II stuff hundreds of times and I still don't find the story that easy to follow).

I'm sure the art is just going to be the current tour art. They already made so much of it and it clearly fits the 90s "story arc." The new Try video already included Bill's obscure nonsensical alchemic symbols. Maybe he will sit down with Alex Jones or Jordan Peterson to mansplain it to us if it ever comes out.

He and Bill both subscribe to a "universal meaning" perspective on mythology. (They both like Carl Jung [probably Joseph Campbell as well, I think I recall]) They put the allegedly universal (male) life journey at the center of all meaning and myth making and then dress it all up to sound like the Truth.

I'm not sure Jordan does that. I quite like Jordan but he's not always right I guess.

I don't know what that means. Because they agitate to be treated as normal people?
