lol "pitchfork-bred idea"

pitchfork loves derivative garbage if it has a nice media package

i'm sorry this has nothing to do with the thread but i do love how dorks like to act like pitchfork defines "hip" instead of slavishly following it

i was under the impression that almost all musical subcultures praise innovation to some degree. "artist X was the first to do Y isn't that cool". except for metal of course. there innovation is like breaking a vow.

wouldn't underestimate the power of that site, even if it's waning. they certainly had a big influence on many people. pretty sure very few people would know in the aeroplane over the sea without pitchfork

untrue about metal but okay

i mean some of these really sensitive anti hipster dinosaur guys just really cling to grunge like it's some kind of biblical code of realness so what can you do

at times they embraced bands that weren't big then and that no-one even remembers (walt mink, anyone?). can't believe i'm defending pitchfork here but it seems idiotic to me to deny the extreme influence they had on "indie music" during the last 15 years or so. of course they jump on what's cool among random exclusive groups already, but what else is a website like that supposed to do? should they hire talent scouts or something

This is my band. Feel free to like it, love it, hate it, trash it whatever. I'm thinking there will be at least one like minded individual here who might dig it.

As someone who first bought that album in 1999, and have seen a steady incline of posters over the last decade at the Elephant 6 messageboard, I will tell you this is not true.

If anything, Pitchfork reversed their ratings of it when they realized it was actually a pretty influential album that had amassed a large cult following. Yet another example that Pitchfork became self-aware they were trend-setters, then they had to compensate to try and keep up what they'd missed.

There are layers and layers in this album, which is why many people need multiple listens to "get it". If you just listen to the album superficially, you'll probably be unimpressed or bored. But if you dissect the instrumentation at one listen and then dissect the lyrics in another, or on a third just focus on Jeff Mangum's voice, it starts to all come together...

But yet Kurt Cobain singing about the broken hymen of your highness is alright?

But you at heart are correct, Neutral Milk Hotel is NOT for everyone:

- If you think that that in order for a song to be good they need to use at least eight chord changes, then Neutral Milk Hotel is not for you.
- If a song needs a badass super wicked tasty solo bro! for it to be good, then Neutral Milk Hotel is not for you.
- If you think the use of bagpipes, accordions and singing saws in a rock song is retarded or lame, then Neutral Milk Hotel is not for you.
- If you think an album needs to be recorded in a million-dollar studio and needs to have crystal clear fidelity, then Neutral Milk Hotel is not for you.
- If you are annoyed by surreal lyrics and often say "Wtf is this guy even singing about?" then Neutral Milk Hotel is not for you.
- If you are easily nauseated by lyrics about semen, fetuses and children being slaughtered by Nazis, wolves and their own parents, then Neutral Milk Hotel is not for you.
