Default Local Bands

Good metal bill this Saturday.

Feral Light (Mpls - two-piece black metal/crust)
Former Worlds (Mpls - Sci-fi inspired doom)
Woman is Earth (Rapid City, SD - atmospheric black metal)

House party in another part of town prior to the show so I hope I make it.

Excited to record Wax Lead and Temple on Thursday. Deathrock. Not as familiar with Grey Coats or Wet Legs.

So do you record live shows or also studio shit for bands as well? I've been doing the latter for a couple years now & am interested in possibly getting into live recording as well, though that seems a HELL of a lot more daunting/pressure-y than just gettin' the band in the studio w/ the luxury of multiple takes & ample time for sound/equipment checking, etc

as for local bands, one of the best ones around here just played their final show last weekend, so that was kinda sad, but they played with a newer one called Ole English that i'm getting to record in a week or so

I'll be in Austin later this month, so i might actually be able to

I have some friends over there that put out an album as "The Sidepiece Collective" a few months ago

Haven't heard the full thing yet but I used to play w/ the drummer & as musicians they're insane

Live shows/field recording only since 2004. In the back of my head I always wanted to get into studio recording but never really had the discipline. Plenty of friends have built their own studios in their house or elsewhere. A few of them have tried to teach me Pro Tools and all that. I just like to document and archive what is going on in a live setting. 2004-2005 I did mostly what's called stealth taping where you wear your gear or "rig" on your person (pulled the stealth shoes outta the closed for SP last August. Five+ hours no bathroom break!). Around 2005 on I started using a big tripod/mic stand and bought some condenser mics + pre-amp + cables etc. Soundboard patches happen about 80% of the time as well. When you walk in with a tripod and a big bag of gear with a shoulder strap there's no hiding anything so you have to do work ahead of time to get clearance form the band and venue. I know a lot of musicians and venue staff around town so local shows are not a problem. Bigger national and international touring bands can certainly be a different story.

I know you're already aware but Thou is from near you in Baton Rouge and of course all of the amazing bands of any genre from New Orleans. I love Jazz. Pears is a great punk band from New Orleans as well.

Starting around 1999 I started downloaded Deftones and live recordings from other bands off napster which lead to doing "mail trades" with people online for CDs and VHS tapes. That eventually lead to buying my own equipment so I could tape the shows I wanted to have recordings of.

I can't recommend it enough. They were one of the most immersive and memorable live acts I've ever seen

It's something that has to be seen in person. They haven't managed to capture how amazing they are live on a record yet in my opinion

i saw a band called Daikaiju a few weeks ago that i'd probably say the same thing for - no idea where they're from (FB page wasn't doing any favors) but good lord, it was unexpected, insane, and yeah, another thing i'd say you almost certainly had the be there to really "get it"

I haven't felt this inspired by a live show in a while. We'll see if it actually amounts to anything but they got me thinking about things I wanna do
