earth - living in the gleam of an unsheathed sword (2005)

i realized today that a lot of the music i am either buying lately is stuff that my roommate during 2004-2006 owned. we were close friends for a couple years before we shacked up though. i later made the mistake of telling him it was cool to let his g/f move in and then next year they moved to vietnam.

Talking

i had that thing happen when you're listening to a gnarly record on a good stereo and the recording is so in the red or fucked or whatever that you actually think your equipment may be malfunctioning

it was the hospitals rich people single. i should have known better. it's hard panned mostly to the left with what sounds like another feed of the same mix playing downstairs in the right channel. i thought my right speaker was fucked.

i love guy/girl acts and this group is just so puzzling. it's weird to think about how like right when they broke up the kills came out to take their place kind of.

turns out i did have something malfunctioning. the right channel kept dropping out at loud volumes (not completely but slightly) which was fixed by jiggling the ground wire. spent this morning deoxing those plugs and re-seated and sprayed my cartridge/stylus mounts as well. everything seems to be fine.

can't stand those niggling problems that won't let you relax.

also the left speaker is sitting on the same shelf as the turntable while the right is on a column. the left speaker is closer to a sloping ceiling while the right one is pretty much in the middle of the room, so there's bound to be a bit more bottom end and reflection happening on the left side, making it "appear" louder at times.

did a lot of research this morning

thanks to an email alert (which i usually ignore) i managed to grab a long-time-restock of an album for half the going rate when it does pop up.

minutes later, their only other album popped up still sealed for its original price. not major scores but it's nice to delete some items from the long time wantlist.

spent way too long tracking down a replacement copy of this. this album (bought it new in 2001) taught me so much about music.

i was gonna post something about how maybe not in most peoples worlds but at least in mine there are format specific releases. i buy a tape because its only available on tape. i'll buy a record because it is superior to cd/digital (also because a lot of what i buy is mastered in analog). or perhaps - gasp - it is only available on vinyl. download codes are a rare luxury, not a prerequisite.

the problem imo with a lot of new records is that there were mastered for digital and the company wants to cash in on the big "vinyl comeback" so they press as cheaply as they can without actually remastering specifically for the vinyl and what comes back will in fact sound worse than the cd. long story short you can't just buy vinyl from anybody.

i kind of agree in the sense that a lot of people do this (people like elphenor totally would) but that's really only the world of dilettantes taking part in the whole "vinyl making a comeback/rsd 20XX" mentality which is only a small small fraction of the vinyl community (mostly the newby toe-dippers/urban outfitters shoppers).

these are the type of people that buy $30 "double LP rainbow swirl free t-shirt" records and play them on $100 crosleys that sound like garbage.

real heads know. swerve on 'em.
