it is the biggest selling double CD of the 90s, so many qualifiers though - Michael Jackson HIStory sold 33 million, but that's a single album + a greatest hits. then there's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by Outkast, which is technically two solo albums packaged together. then there are the classic rock records like The Wall, The White Album, Exile on Main Street, etc. that have vinyl + cd sales counted in. anyway MCIS is up there but i'm not sure it's #1 anymore. but it is the biggest selling double album of original studio material of the 90s

Damn, that rules. Have seen bits of that rehearsal before. Would be really interesting to see the SNL '95 rehearsals- apparently Billy hadn't fully shaved his head during the rehearsals, and when he saw how shitty his hair looked/how obvious it was that he was going bald, he shaved it all off in a panic hours before showtime. that's why his haircut is kind of a mess in the actual performance- you can see strands and bits of hair still there. the rehearsals for all saturday night live performances are viewable at the museum of tv & radio in new york city- have been meaning to check out this performance specifically for a few years now but never have the time when im in new york.

i've watched that bootleg so many times

can even almost resurrect the chills of seeing bill doing the rawk stance in fleeting glimpses amid the strobe when they first come out

what double-album coming after it would have topped it?

Life After Death, The Fragile, maybe even Speakerboxxx/Love Below would have possibly reached the same ballpark, but really i have no idea - unless with all its reissues & resurgences The White Album has finally passed it up

already discussed in this thread. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below doesn't count because it's two solo albums packaged together. MJ's HIStory doesn't count because it's a new album + a greatest hits. The Fragile did not sell as well as MCIS, neither did Life After Death. Only competition MCIS has is from reissues of old double albums like White Album, Physical Graffiti, The Wall, etc

that's like saying White Album doesn't count because it's just "4 solo albums on shuffle" or whatever
just because they approached it like that doesn't change things that much, it was still a double-album of entirely new material from the two of them

Use Your Illusion buries it if you count those as a double album. Since sales are counted 2x on double albums it would have been a 10x multiplatinum double album. Axl was greedy though and wanted the cash from selling the disks separately under the excuse that he wanted fans to be able to afford them one at a time.

i find the more confusing thing to be that albums such as Exile On Main Street or Blonde On Blonde, which yes, did need 2 vinyl to be pressed in their entirety at the time, are still being considered double-albums despite only needing a single disc when the CD era came around - yet if we're going by how many LP's an album needed, wouldn't MC be a quadruple album by that point? Hell even Siamese Dream would be considered a double

it makes sense that they'd be assessed on the grounds that at the time of release, they were approached artistically as double albums, but still it is a little double-standardy

oh yeah there have been a few of those - i remember Nelly and System of a Down pulling the same kind of thing, and Timberlake a bit more recently (+ obv the original release of the Machinas)

personally i would count those but i could understand why one wouldn't, from an arbitrary sales competition standpoint at least

and yes, the outkast album does count as a double. can't really go around making up reasons for every outselling album.
