"snap like a dragon". Yes, a snapdragon is a neat looking flower, but dragons don't otherwise "snap" in the normal course of things.

Most of the lyrics in Slippery Sucktimes just feel like nonsense.

I don't count the new lyrics as I've no frickin' idea what he's on about.

I always used to think that the Tristessa lyric was "Do you ever wake up and find yourself alone? Do you ever wake up on the phone?".

I didn't think that was good.

Oh you covered this already.

It does make me uncomfortable. But do I still like the song? Yes. Itís like a horror movie. Or something. I donít know shut up!

I also generally don’t care about quality of lyrics. Aside from Fiona apple and Jenny Lewis all lyrics are pretty bad.

Yeah that’s what I said

I mean. I dunno. No one else makes me even pay attention to their lyrics. But those two do consistently. Jenny’s storytelling is fucking otherworldly (does he love you, late bloomer, etc.)

I mean, no one else's lyrics might grab you but I don't think it can be denied that there are many songs out there that are iconic largely because of their lyrics. Take Don McLean's American Pie, for example. It's a simple melody and arrangement, but it's a classic because it's a lyrical masterpiece that reflects the world at that point in time. Or, on the other side of the spectrum, you have a song like Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, which is a marvel musically, but the lyrics, absurd as they often are, are a big part of what made people stop and take notice. I don't think you're giving lyricists enough credit.

Probably true. I got a high bar I guess.

Those two don’t get enough credit though.

Fiona Apple’s lyrics on Regret are stunning and better than all of Billy’s lines put together imo. That song will make you /hurt/

'Member when I was so sick and you didn't believe me?
Then you got sick too and guess who took care of you?
You hated that, didn't you? Didn't you?
Now when you look at me, you're condemned to see
The monster your mother made you to be
And there - you got me - that's how you got free
You got rid of me

Like godDAMN

I mean, that’s great, but is it better than the lyrics to Mayonaise? Or The Aeroplane Flies High? Or Thru the Eyes of Ruby? You might think so and there are probably many who would agree but I’m sure you could find just as many who wouldn’t. I don’t know. Like all things to do with music, it’s subjective. But I don’t think you’re giving (pre-Machina) Billy enough credit as a lyricist.

I’d actually posit that his machina lyrics are his best? Maybe?

Well no Adore takes that pretty easily I think.

Adore's lyrics are far better than Machina. I feel like Machina is where he started to really lose his ability as a master lyricist. He got so lost in creating this rock opera that the songs themselves suffered. No one will ever convince me that the lyrics to HMM or Imploding Voice or RADIO RADIO RADIO are good.

I strongly disagree with your I of the mourning take. Better lyrics than anything from Gish to mcis.

Its all subjective and machina was my first entry into this band so I could be biased. But I love that song

"Sometimes, the trees sketch a curious ballet,
Imitate my small body cradled by the wind,
And the ivy murmurs familiar words,
Bears on life a look of pure child
to smell the sweet exhaled perfumes
Of a garden of which you adored the secret,
Sing then the cheerful hazy girls
Of the river glistening and made pearly"

"Radio, play my favourite song
Radio radio radio
I'm alone
Radio, radio, please don't go, radio
I peer thru curtains on empty streets
Behind a wall of caller i.d."

To each his own but for my money, that's some of the worst shit he's ever written.

I like Travels but I have to say that he could have tried a bit harder with the lyrics in the verses. It’s all just “See this, see that.”

I don't think he does, it doesn't sound like rape to me. And live he always says break, too. Like I already said I think it's clear he is talking about rape ("I wanna fill you up, I want to break/rape you, I want to give you up") but I clearly hear the BR-. Am I crazy? Like I'm really trying to hear it as "rape" but it is so clearly not.
