When academics say that race is a social construct, I'm pretty sure they aren't saying that one can just pretend to be another race. Kind of annoying how Dolezal just dodges questions about her justifications and just goes "well, it's really complex and there are just like so many issues right now and they are so complex, O.K.?"

I mean, yeah, seeing as race is more social than biological (that's not to say that people from different regions don't have different concentrations of alleles), if one had no near ancestors from Africa, but had a black family and were raised to think she were black and was thought black by everyone and treated like black people are treated, sure, that person's life experience would be just as "black" as someone who had "black blood" in them. But that's a hypothetical thought experiment that doesn't really bear resemblance to Dolezal's story, who is someone who had a white upbringing, knew she was white, and then pretended not to be for reasons.

I can't really tell what the angle is, though. I don't see what she gained. She could had been an advocate for racial justice just the same as a white person. If this were to get, like, whatever small advantages come from being a minority under equity programmes, and all she wanted was an easier time getting into school or something, you'd think she'd keep a low profile, instead of becoming president of a chapter of the NAACP. I can't tell what the rational motive would be, so she might just have psychological issues.

Sex is a lot more complicated than that. Some people have mosaicism, meaning they have XX and XY cells. Some people's chromosomes don't match their organs. Some people's gonads don't match their genitals. Biologists now recognize at least five sexes in humans, and that's just categorizing what is in reality more of a continuum. A significant portion of the population does not fit into the male-female dichotomy.

Add in the distinction between sex and gender, and it gets a lot more complex. One could be genetically, unambiguously female, but identify as a man (female and male are sexes, man and woman and genders).

boy i wanted to like all of that but if you think about amy/rory/river as people they don't make any sense. and that would be okay with river being all the weird shit that she is...
