my parents are fucking insane. i thought that coming here to florida at least i would leave all the grocery store drama behind but no it's actually WORSE here.
they've managed to piss off the entire publix store. they go and make a scene like every other day. they carefully look at the receipt and if any price is off they demand the "publix promise" which is getting that item free. my dad said they've got 30-40 (in other words 60-70) items free over the last 5 years. and they always sample the free shit. ALWAYS. and they make the workers bring out fresh stuff from the bakery or go and find better looking cucumbers... stupid fucking shit. when we walk in the tension is palpable. they are notorious. jesus fuck. now i know why i'm so weird: my parents. FUCK |

i'm embarrassed for you, took. i'm sorry.
my dad insists on telling these stupid corny jokes to people who probably never want to hear them (wait staff, cashiers, etc) and my mom forces any professional (doctor, cable guy, appliance repair, hairstylist, etc) into a conversation for FAR LONGER than is comfortable talking about entirely too personal information. but i feel like that's still in the realm of normal-annoying 85% of the time (she did have a reputation at our family doctor's though...). but tbh your dad/parents sound extreme. and the religious thing makes it infinitely worse. i second the request for pics! |

that said there are about 10-20 customers who are always trouble who you just can't satisfy who everyone knows. hopefully your parents aren't in that category. for us it's people who return without receipt expensive items or items that were BOGO not long ago over and over again, people who intentionally misuse coupons, and some misc like this one lady always tries to cash her check and like 1/2 the time our check service rejects it it spits out a receipt telling her if she wants to know why to call. so she always makes us call for her. and it's always because she's cashed too many checks in whatever timeframe. |

i think they are. maybe not total assholes, but definitely weirdos with assholish aspects.
i will go shopping with my mom's shopping list BY MY SELF and be extremely polite and nice maybe that will help? or will i just add creepy to weird and assholish? |

LADS I am so happy right now. Band practice on Saturday, and I get to produce a baseball game on Sunday. I love baseball more than probably anything else; I'm so so excited. My diet's working and I lost like 15 lbs in two months and summertime is approaching.
I might buy a ticket for the reunion tonite. Things are looking up!! |

is it bad that i agree with took's father that corporate supermarkets need to be held accountable for doing deliberate little fuckups with "special sale" miscalculations (that naturally always somehow end up overcharging you, by complete mistake)?
oh my god, am i finally an old man? |

Then you're badgering someone who makes $10 an hour over a $.07 mistake. I'd personally rather just eat the difference. |

that said, I have only started to learn to let my mom be and simply accept her quirks a few years ago. your dad and my mom should go grocery shopping together, there would be a blood bath. my mom bought like 3 items of whatever while visiting another city in another state, in a super market before taking a train back home. back home, she realized on the receipt were only 2 of the 3 items. she took a train to that city again in the same week, with that item and the receipt. to pay. euro 1,50. what else. oh yea she cannot see any other person with a book in their hands without asking to see the cover in full (so she sees author and title.) I witnessed that again while visiting home recently for a day. that 15? year old girl looked up, stared at her, and went "fuck you", and kept reading. In that moment I was silently praying my mom would not smack her for that answer. (she did not.) |

one more for your entertainment:
we stand on a small square in the city center, listening to a street musician. next to my mom is an open garbage bin. she sees the sleeve of a children's winter jacket hanging out on top, pulls it out. (she will then take it home, wash it, if necessary mend it, and bring it to the caritas/red cross store along with other garments she got the same way.) a man close to us witnesses that, walks over, and hands my mom a 10 euro note with the words "take care of yourself." my mom takes the money without a word but immediately - so that the man sees it - drops his 10 euros in the basket of the street musician. when I asked her if that happened before, she said "yes not that often, maybe once a week." |

My last trip home, my Dad was driving uphill with my Mum in the passenger seat, and me and my kids in the back. This guy came barrelling down the hill, without pulling to the side to allow us to pass, expecting us to move over. Oh man. It was like straight out of Falling Down or some shit. He wouldn't move out of the guy's way. It was 5pm and cars lined up behind us in both directions, about 10 or 11 deep. Which is a lot in a small city like Wellington. People got out of their cars to see what was going on and there's my Dad, sitting there in his Toyota Platz that he bought off my brother when my brother upgraded, cheapest fucking ugliest car in the city, with his wife, daughter and two grandsons, refusing to move, like the fucking North Going Zax, saying over and over "No, I won't move. You're supposed to give way to traffic coming uphill. Everybody knows that. You back up!".
Half the people are backing him up, all outraged... "Yeah! You back up!" And the other half were like "But, you do have about four feet here sir, if you would just pull over a little and let him pass, we can all get moving again." Since then....I have been trying to just...let go, of more stuff. It just isn't worth it. |

I mean, obviously growing up with a father like that, I have been effectively indoctrinated with correct driver etiquette in hilly areas and I LOATHE when traffic coming down does not give way to traffic coming up.
But you know, I just gotta let go of that, and breathe. The rage I feel when I witness queue jumping is going to take a little more undoing... |
