Smile Valentine's Day help

Hey I've got this Ben Kweller concert I recorded for my girl. It's not pro or anything but I think it came out pretty decent for a music player mic. The only problem is there are some crackles or pops or something when the volume gets too loud as there is no recording volume control. I was wonder if one of you wizards here could clean it up? If you like Ben Kweller I thought it was a great show too. oh please oh thank you!

did you listen to it? it's only from time to time, it doesn't ruin the recording.

can you upload a file that isn't 125+ megs? What you described, "crackles or pops or something when the volume gets too loud" is clipping and basically impossible to fix.

I thought they might be more like tape pops...like from those adore demos and QAOS. How are those different?

I'm no expert in this but this is as I understand it: With a tape, you're getting pops from stuff actually being on the tape or heads. When you a record to a .wav file, pops are unlikely to show up unless you have a bad cable or a bad hard drive (both unlikely). The pops on your recording are what your ear hears when your recording clips (that is, the input volume is too much for your recording to handle, so some of it gets lost). If you open your recording in a sound editor (I recommend Audacity), you should see that the waveform looks like a block (the peaks are "clipped" off) during the parts where you get popping. Of course, there are varying degrees of clipping , some more fixable than others (depends how bad the volume overload is, or it might just be at a certain frequency)

Ok, well mine doesn't seem too bad, to listen to especially, like when the pops or crackles happen it doesn't block out the music. The waveform doesn't look like a block but it is clipped. I hope mine is the more fixable kind.

Had a look at it...notice how the pops are where the waveform peaks out. There is the chance that you might be able to fix them with pencil tool, but that would take ages...

yeah I noticed. Pencil tool? If there is anyway to fix this I'd like to know. I'm familiar with a lot of this stuff but really using it for the first time but it'd be worth it to me.

easy way to fix it is to delete the clipped parts. yes it's not an ideal solution, but with any wave editor that allows fairly high zooming levels (i use nero wave editor) you can delete just the clipped portion of the pop or crackle, and then you don't really notice it as much.

note - some "clips" when zoomed in might be a series of multiple clips followed by unclipped wave patterns repeated. i suggest zooming in close and only deleting the clipped parts and seeing how it sounds, instead of deleting say a full half a second of a general clipped area.

there's no magic way to fix clipping - so it's a rough job to have it ready in less than 2 days, or you go the redraw method which might be ready for next valentines day of 2009.

um the odd sample rate is just what the recorder sets it at. you can't change it. that's awesome you're looking at it!

i ran the de-click and de-crackle plugins in protools to the max and EQed it a little with the L3-multimaximizer plugin. artifacts from the crackling can still be heard, but they are WAY less annoying now. and some of the small ones were removed completely. i had to upsample to 44.1 khz and i converted it to stereo and added some slight stereo imaging so its not totally mono anymore. its bouncing right now, so it has to play back in real time. when its done ill flac it to reduce the file size and you can split the tracks yourself after i sendspace it to you.

thought it sounded good for the mic that was used. but the low sample rate was what hurt it. i dont know what you used exactly, but if you could lower the recording level and set the sample rate to 44100 it wouldnt be so bad. it would have been nice if it recorded in stereo too. but i doubt you would have had the storage space to record it like that even if it was possible on the device. epecially if it was a recording longer than 73 mins or whatever it was.

It's a two gig device and when you record something stores in .wav.

So I've listened to it a little and the clips are a lot less harsh and having a lot less is great! thank you so much.
