Default fantasy hockey help

This is my first time playing. We just got through our draft, and I'm wondering what I should try and trade for. Our point system is pretty basic Goals are 10 (PPG 15, SHG 20), assists 5, +/- * 2.5, PIM * 2. for goalies: (w-l)*10, saves are .25 points, goals against 1, shutouts 50. Must start 3 centers, 3 rws, 3lws, 4 defensemen, 3 goalies, 2 utility guys.

C Lang, R Det 22 30 49 4 24
C Datsyuk, P Det 35 30 38 -2 35
C Arnott, J Dal 58 21 36 23 66
C Savard, M Atl 114 19 33 -8 85
C Smolinski, B Ott 120 19 27 22 49
C Horcoff, S Edm 166 15 25 0 73
D McCabe, B Tor 59 16 37 22 86
D Johnsson, K Phi 116 13 29 16 26
D Ohlund, M Van 157 14 20 14 73
D Kalinin, D Buf 168 10 24 0 42
D Fischer, J Det 435 4 15 0 75
D Kronwall, N Det 612 1 4 5 16
LW Naslund, M Van 6 35 49 24 58
LW Tkachuk, K Stl 33 33 38 8 83
LW Smyth, R Edm 49 23 36 11 70
LW Kvasha, O NYI 96 15 36 4 48
LW Frolov, A La 134 24 24 8 24
LW Whitney, R Car 152 14 29 7 22
LW Hartnell, S Nsh 171 18 15 0 73
LW Malone, R Pit 173 22 21 -23 64
RW Hossa, M Ott 8 36 46 4 46
RW Guerin, B Dal 20 34 35 14 109
RW Walker, S Nsh 48 25 42 4 94
RW Gaborik, M Min 70 18 22 10 20
RW Langenbrunner, J NJ 268 10 16 9 43

P. Lalime Stl 68 25 23 127 1207 5
J. Markkannen Edm 92 10 14 65 728 2
D. Roloson Min 108 19 18 89 1234 5

Obviously I think I need a better goalie. I'm happy with Roloson since the goalie stats are pretty much based on wins and losses (and minnesota will be good), but the other two are on crappy teams. How much should I be willing to give up for a Turco? I was thinking of getting both Detroit goalies since their team will win a ton. What's my strongest position to give someone up at (LW?)? I'm thinking of trading Savard for Zetterberg and then shopping one of my top 4 LWs for a goalie. Also, am I nuts for penciling in Fischer and Kronwall as defensemen? They're top-4 d-men on the wings so they should get alot of playing time and pull alot of PIM if nothing else.

Advice welcome.

1. Minnisota won't win much. They're in the toughest division in the league, and they'll have 32 games against Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Colorado. If this promised crackdown on obstruction really does happen this year, they'll be in alot of trouble.

2. Markannen was injured recently. He's expected to be back for the start of the season, but he might not be a starter right away. If at even... Edm's goalie situation is kinda odd right now, two semi-proven goalies who are both a little better than backups but haven't shown themselves to be starters yet. It's really up in the air as to who will get the most starts.... Oiler fans just refer to them as Conkannen. I think i'd prefer Markannen to start, but I guess I could leave this one up to MacTavish.

3. St. Louis is going to be pretty bad. Esp. since they've lost their two best D in Pronger and MacInnis. Trust me, Brewer is not an adequate replacement.

4. You probably know as well as anyone that Datsyuk probably won't be playing in the NHL this year, or at least not hte first half. I'd be leery of drafting him. Last i heard he'd signed with a RSL team, but there's still talk of him sticking around, so... who knows.

5. It looks like Wins are the best way of getting points out of your goalies, so you might be able to get someone like Cloutier for cheap....

6. what are those numbers after the players names? I can't figure out the first number.... 2nd and 3rd are goals and assists... 4th looks like plus minus... fifth is PIM?

wait, does that mean plus minus is the result times 2.5? Yesh, whoever got Rick Nash had better he hope he scores enough to make up for the hit he'll take on that one.

The guy can score, but he's of no help to his team in actually winning games.

Datsyuk is set to play in Russia, that won't help you.

and by the way, Hossa is in Atlanta now, not Ottawa.

If you're looking for a D who may not have even been drafted already but who will get you more points than Fisher or Kronwall, I'd go with Marc-Andre Bergeron of the Oilers.

54 9 17 26 13(Plus minus) 26(PIM) 3(PPG) 7(PPA)

That's only in 54 games, and this year he'll play alot more PP AND probably be paired with Pronger.

That'll do alot for his offence.

I dont have much experience with regular season ones, so.... what's the differnce really?

In other news, I cannot fucking wait for this season to start already.

Well I don't even know if I get this right or not, but the way I see it, the difference between a fantasy league and a regular pool is this :

the fantasy league : you need to chose who will "start" and you play against another member of the league.

a pool (which I like a lot better) : it's the totals of all your players points (whatever the scoring system is) for the entire season, everybody counts all the time.

a formula that I really liked that was extremely simple was this :

you pick fifteen skaters (regardless forwards or d-men)
1 goal = 1 point
1 assist = 1 point

your top 12 pointers count towards your standings, so you have 3 spots for injured players/long shots that don't count

That's not bad, i agree that the more simple it is the better, but i would like to see say 4 spaces for D-men in there. Otherwise no one will pick any, and people will just be content to go through the top scorers list from last season.

I also like the use of the plus-minus statistic... it's a bit team-dependant, but it's also a pretty good indicator of a player's actual help to his team.

I think i'd rather just leave goalies out of it, but i guess they'd have their place...

4 spots for d-men would be a good thing.

my dad has always played with that formula and my first hockey pools were like this. Paul Coffey was still a great offensive threat along with Ray Bourque and a bunch of others that were up there in the scoring rankings amongst all skaters. other guys like Leetch and Zubov (this guy scored 89 points in 93-94), in the last NHL season, 89 points would have been a scoring title contender.

yeah, but in these times, there aren't any D that are gonna challenge for any scoring titles.

That's not to say nobody would select any D for this sorta pool though...

anyway, i gotta sleep. maybe people who have more experience in this sorta thing should plan it out...

but yeah a pool would be better than a leauge.

I wouldn't mind putting it together.

it could be :

11 forwards, 4 defensemen

top 9 forwards count and top 3 dmen

or something like that

open to suggestions/vote

I'd just like to chime in saying that Lalime is a solid pick that could surprise you. the dude comes out of nowhere sometimes and plays some huge games.
