Classical liberalism is what I learned the definition for "liberalism" for in school, so that's generally what I think of when I think of liberalism. I wouldn't say it's really the same as American libertarianism, more like the mother of Democratic-friendly ideologies. Adam Smith was a liberal capitalist, but some of his ideas are not as extreme as the economic positions taken by today's libertarians, whereas some of the classical liberal political philosophers, like Rousseau, had ideas which socially are far to the right of what a modern libertarian would believe (a true one, not like fuzzyroes who likes the word because he thinks it's a euphemism for conservative dickbag).

When I think big picture liberalism, I think of ideas like the social contract, mandate of the governed, government as arbiter, inalienable personal rights and freedoms and protections from abusive government, etc., which kind of is the opposite of authoritarianism, which essentially subverts individuals to the state, for the state's benefit.

I filled out a survey with 100 questions prior to the last election (Euro, where I can vote). It was to find out which party's program you most support. I found it hilarious because I knew whom I would vote. I found it less hilarious when my result said I agree to 70% (and that was my highest agreement level with any party) with the center conservative party. Disappointing, indeed.
