Very funny. Hahaha they rode a pony to death and were so fucking stupid, that 2 dozen animals died. Hahaha. And Jackson isn't responsible anyway, so what's your point.

I'll be seeing this one in Imax. But I'm to the point where I don't even care about it anymore. This should have been a normal length movie, 2 hrs at most. Jackson is taking an enormous dump on fans with this.

I'm more interested in Zero Dark Thirty

My point was, it's not Peter Jackson's fault. And fuck Peta. I never laughed about animals deaths.

It's okay. I don't like the fact that this happened, but I'm still going to see the film.

Just saw it.

A bit too padded out, especially at the beginning (did we really need that bit with Frodo at the beginning, for example?). I do appreciate that it's not as dark, brooding and serious as the first three LOTR movies, but at times the goofy moments (and there are plenty) bordered on self-parody. Radagast was god-awful, for one; almost Jar-Jar Binks-ian in his obnoxiousness. Thank God he wasn't in the movie much. After a sluggish start, the movie got better as it went along. The last hour was damn good.

Thorin looked like a Klingon, but I did like him. Martin Freeman as Bilbo was okay. Nice seeing Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee, Cate Blanchett, etc. back in the saddle.

3D was very good in this. What's this big fuss about the movie being shot at 48fps? I don't think it made the movie look cheesy at all.

Overall, good not great. Could have and probably should have been about a 1/2 hour shorter. I expect better with Part 2.

B / B-

Radagast's preferred means of transportation is a sled pulled by rabbits, an entirely original concept of the movie.

I was a little surprised they had Frodo at the beginning. I thought Thorin was great and it was nice to see Rivendell again <3 I think Radagast was only mentioned one time in the book, but didn't mind his scenes.

Let us know how the 48 fps is. All I'm getting is that it looks too "clean" and "smooth". Whatever the hell that means.

i think it's like when you meet a really devoutly religious person and they just sort of shine a little too much

too clean and smooth

like a piece of polished silver sitting in a mirror-backed cabinet, walled off from the world by a thick sheet of glass

Did you see it in a 48fps 3D theater? Very few theaters are showing It that way. If you didn't it would look like normal 3D

Idk if I saw 48 fps or not. The theater was digital and built in the last year. Not sure what all the fuss is about.

B+

Things I liked

–The whole beginning of the movie through the trolls was pretty faithful to the book and I loved the crazy plate scene and the overall character of the dwarves.
–The opening sequence was awesome, Erebor was just like I imagined
–The trolls were awesome as well
–The inclusion of fantastical bits like the giants hurling rocks at each other, which helped keep the tone of the movie true to the book. LOTR had a lot of the more whimsical stuff cut to keep it relatively dark
–The whole under the mountain scene, thought the goblins were done very well and probably truer to Tolkien's vision than the goblins from Moria in LOTR.
–Riddles in the dark was a great sequence... I wish they had cut out some of the irrelevant stuff to lengthen this scene.
–Martin Freeman is great as Bilbo

Things I didn't like

–Radagast could have been included without having him ride on a sled from Mirkwood to Eriador in 2 minutes. That seemed stupid. I didn't give a shit about his rabbit sled though.
–The section from right after the trolls until they left Rivendell felt like a mess. The orc attack was unnecessary and killed the nuance and mystery of dark forces gaining power, and of course also led to the stupid Radagast chase thing. Then they go down this random hole in the ground... which BTW, was that scene filmed where they filmed the Rohan shit for LOTR? It didn't look like it belonged on that side of the Misty Mountains at all.
–Then they get to Rivendell, and although Hugo Weaving and Christopher Lee are great, the whole thing was done kind of strange. I didn't mind Galadriel and Saruman doin the White Council thing, but I thought this scene had a huge amount of potential and fell flat. There was no reason to invent that stupid story about the Witch King's blade being taken from his crypt... everyone knows the Witch King escaped the last battle in the war against Angmar and how does one bury an incorporeal black rider anyway?
–Gandalf should have known that the Necromance was in Dol Guldur, since he went there and that is how he got the key from Thrain, Thorin's father. How Jackson could have messed this up is kind of
–Why was Saruman such a dick and obviously all up in his own agenda? He should have been much more subtle, seeing as he doesn't come out against Gandalf openly for 60 some years. It's also not entirely clear why the White Council doesn't want the dragon destroyed. I can't remember if this was included in Unfinished Tales or not, I'd have to check
–The Azog story was kind of unnecessary but what bothered me more was the fact that he looked like a CGI turd. The Goblin King was cartoonish, yet it worked for me. Azog looked like a Star Wars character

fun but a bit long.

i loved the HFCS and 3d. slick.

rabbit sled was hilarious. i also enjoyed that radagast had bird shit in his hair

azog looked like a juiced up benedict cumberbatch

wtf is it with tolkien and fucking eagles ex machina? and how can a moth or whatever fly off to Eagle Country and back so quickly? i mean it's a story with basically one implausible occurrence after another but that took the cake

also if you think about it gandalf is basically this kind of meddlesome asshole who goes around replacing extant dictators with those of his own choosing. kind of like the united states. no wonder 60 years later it all comes back to bite him in the ass. explains why hobbits don't wear shoes – gandalf would have covered the shire in x-ray machines and they'd all be riddled with tumours
