Starrcraft is Teargarden-level trash. Dulcet and Dopamine are Oceania-level trash.

Wrath, Hidden Sun and Tyger (Empire of the Sun shiiiiieeeet) are way better.

Each to their own though. Be your own man. Use your own avatar.

Hidden Sun has really pretty melodies and I consider it one of the best tracks on the record. Same with Starrcraft.

I would personally consider any list containing Tyger, Tyger to be suspect at best.

You see, Woody? This is how to write a balanced and mature critical assessment. No cuss-words, no put downs, no allusions to AVATAR THEIFERY.

Starrcraft.... where he does the loud and weird "ha,ha,yaaa, yaya"? With the awful clap-clap-clap-clap drumbeat?

Tyger Tyger is some Luke Steele, David Byrne shit. It's an obvious departure, awkward as hell, but nails the minimalist pop trend of recent years and has a swagger different to the rest of the record.

I have never stolen anyone's avatar.

Yeah, but it's also got that nice "We do what we want 'till we want just one more life" pre-chorus bit. The delivery really reminds me of old SP, and you've got James on ebow in it a fair bit. So it gets points from me despite the claps, which I agree are a bleh ingredient. And if that song really is partially about D'Arcy leaving for good, as has been suggested, that makes it really noteworthy to me.

The general awkwardness of Tyger kills it for me, and recent pop trends leave me cold, I'm just not a fan of it. And those "I've got to know, I've got to know" backing vox are cheesy as all hell to me, lol

oh god that's such a bad backing vocal. i thought it was a sample of a small child at first

it's the perfect example of the downfall of the band when you listen to the similar part on 1979 then that

I like the ha,ha,yaaa, yaya part. Methinks tis a testament to WPC's creative playfullness. Forsooth.

I think this is kinda like when Aslan came back but Trumpkin couldn't recognize him because the Telmarines had brainwashed everyone into thinking that there was no Aslan. But Lucy saw Aslan because she had faith.

Aslan: WPC's re-ascension ("Like a Pheonix I will rise")
Trumpkin: Ram27, Joey Marola, etc.
Lucy: FoolofaTook, Run2Pee, etc.

I keep getting bits of CYR songs stuck in my head. It's so strange after hating WPC for so long.

I'm scared.

The 50 greatest albums of 2020
44. The Smashing Pumpkins – Cyr (Sumerian)
Boasting both an enviably broad musical palette and a thoroughly distinctive frontman in Billy Corgan, The Smashing Pumpkins are a rare example of a band who are simultaneously ever-changing and immediately identifiable. Across two discs, 20 songs and 72 minutes, Cyr relentlessly tested this theory to its limit.

It was certainly worlds apart from its predecessor, 2018’s Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol 1. That album found 75 per cent of the band’s classic line-up easing back into active duty with half an hour of music that felt precision-tooled to call back to their commercial peak. Cyr’s comparative capaciousness wasn’t confined to its duration, with Billy leading the Pumpkins through passages of post-punk, electronica and synthpop, severely restricting the audible presence of guitars in favour of dominant keyboards.

What remained constant was Billy’s way with a catchy tune, with Ramona and the title-track hitting that sweet spot of yearning nostalgia that’s marked many a Pumpkins classic. If Cyr couldn’t match the gonzo opulence of their Mellon Collie era (and they’re working on a follow-up to that), it nevertheless made a convincing case that there’s still plenty to enjoy in these alt-veterans’ explorations. (OT)

Will "Mellon Collie Part 2" stop the commercial downfall of SP...?

Usually when I'm not keen on an album but think some parts are nice after one listen, I'll return to it, those nice parts become parts I really enjoy and new nice parts crop up.

The opposite happened with this: I'm bored shitless of all the nice parts.

I just can’t get past the vocals to find anything of worth. I could tolerate the lyrics if the vocals weren’t what they are.
