Maybe he’ll pause and realise that just because he can recognise or recreate modern sounding production techniques, doesn’t mean he should or that’s what any audience wants from him. Lol no of course not.

I’m very cautious about these new Machina mixes, where he seems to be battling with an urge to “loud-at-any-volume, vocals-on-top” the thing.

He'll blame it on streaming etc, maybe will blame the label at some later point. But they did a good job marketing it, with the website, and the countdown, though I do think they released too many songs in advance - should've only been 3 or 4, so people would actually want to buy the album then.

But having ten songs, knowing the whole thing sounded the same, took away the mystery. Remember the days of buying a CD and reading the song titles wondering "what's that going to sound like??"

I'm certain that if he had actually made a retro Pumpkins album, guitars to the fore etc, it would've done better. He'll say that he did that on Oceania and it wasn't what people wanted, but it did chart higher and most fans agree it's a decent album. It didn't break big though as it was caught up in the fall out of the original band break up, and it was just Billy. If they had released Oceania with James and Jimmy, then it would've been received better.

Where to now for the band?

Answer: just make a goddamn guitar album. Let Jimmy drum the hell out of it. Lay down some guitar solos. Have at least one long song. A few dreamy passages. Sing softer. DONE.

sorry if this is untrue -- has he talked about real love yet? i'm so curious about the track sheet on that. i'm still not sure what jimmy's doing - it almost sounds like 16ths on the hihat during the verses

You basically described Zeitgeist and it was a bomb.

I think it's time to aknowledge the golden age of SP was maybe a product of sheer spontaneity, youthful brilliance and the perfect context in place and time for those songs.

The moment he started doing things according to his own "taste" well... it proved to be a very poor one, imo.
