Default The Beach Boys

I've been on a big Beach Boys kick lately. I read Mike Loves book (highly recommend it) and it's set me on a listening journey.

I just love the innocence and wholesomeness of the lyrics. Obviously there's a lot of crap on their albums (in the 60's all you aimed for was a few hit songs and the rest would be filler) but the hits just put a massive smile on my face.

Any other fans here?

My fav Beach Boys jam

Innocent as their lyrics might've been, their story is pretty damn dark.

That was pretty sweet, I hadn't heard that one yet.

This is my favorite song, even though it's one of the biggest hits. I just love the lyrics and check out that performance.

This part just makes me smile:

Well you knew all along
That your dad was gettin' wise to you now
(You shouldn't have lied now you shouldn't have lied)
And since he took your set of keys
You've been thinking that your fun is all through now
(You shouldn't have lied now you shouldn't have lied)

Good ole Americana at it's best

This song just puts a huge smile on my face too.

You always hear how awesome Brian Wilson is, but Mike Love was a pretty important piece of the band too.

I don't love everything they've done but SMiLE is probably one of my favorite albums of all time.

I'm a huge fan. Other than Pet Sounds and Smile,'69-'73 is a pretty fantastic era.

20/20, Sunflower, Surfs Up and Holland are all great.

I'm afraid to admit that I find it a little overrated. I mean it obviously has 3 or 4 great songs and great lyrical content, but I just don't find it to be the masterpiece that it's made out to be.

i don't know if i can call myself a huge Beach Boys fan, but Pet Sounds is a really, really beautiful work of art.

Tony Asher's lyrics are actually on the weak side, but they're set to such massively powerful music, they become correct in their own right. Brian Wilson has such a weird, deep musical mind. the progressions and melodies and orchestrations and arrangements and production ideas he came up with are unparalleled.

pet sounds is great, but if smile would have been finished at the time everything might have been different for music. I love it and have the deluxe box set

Are you guys familiar with their stage show during the mid 70's? So amazing.

I was watching this prime-time special showcasing their show from Anaheim field in 76 and this opening with Fun, Fun, Fun is the best thing I've ever seen. The get-ups, Brian Wilson smoking a joint in bed, Al Jardine dressed like Uncle Sam, Dennis Wilson in his sail boat. And honestly, what the hell is Mike Love wearing?!

Here's a kick-ass version of Be True To Your School from the same airing.

Just look at what Mike Love is wearing! so awesome.

Sounds like Weezer. Weezers pretty much just a grunge Beach Boys.
