I am about to go get dinner with a woman I dated for five months last year. I'm not sure if this is a bad idea or a really bad idea. We've stayed friendly but the breakup was initiated by me and I am afraid she is trying to fire things back up. Because we have remained in contact though, I felt like I couldn't say no

I liked her but there just wasn't enough chemistry on my end, and I probably wasn't ready for a serious relationship. I told her that from the outset and she said it was fine, but I sensed she was becoming emotionally attached and decided it was best to end things.

indeed it is. we had a really nice dinner and talked for several hours, they actually had to kick us out. There was no awkwardness and we caught up on everything, including each other's dating lives. She's super logical and down to earth, which is really nice. I did kind of sense there was still a mutual attraction and I was kind of surprised at myself for missing her while we were talking. Still, my life is a mess and I already hurt her once so I told her it was really nice catching up and I'm glad we can be friends and left it at that

i can see why you feel that way, but it doesn't mean your relationship was a lie.
breaking up can lead people to make very rash (read: childish) decisions, just to take the pain away or alleviate it. he was probably just somebody she could easily reach out to or whatever, and he happened to be free.

i mean who knows what the circumstances were, but regardless - it doesn't make all four years you spent with her a lie. you don't spend that much time with a person unless you care about them.

i just meant it as a general feeling it gives me. she's not a liar. she's also quite level-headed and not very impulsive.
i don't think he'd be somebody to easily reach out to, unless they were still in contact without my knowledge. i don't actually know who he is. i know the name of an ex and have seen pictures, but can't be sure it's that guy. she simply has never mentioned past relationships ever except high school stuff, all i know is she said she was always the dumpee.
