Here’s my claim about Zeitgeist: Better than Siamese Dream or Gish.

Here’s my bold follow-up: Almost any musicologist would agree with my viewpoint. (i.e. if we look at the actual compositions… the novelty of the harmonies, the skillful use of counterpoint, the way the songs take a theme and develop it, or take two themes and integrate them, etc.)

If we look past little sticking points like whether a certain B-side should have made the cut, or whether the vocals are mixed a little too loud, I think it’s clear that Zietgeist shows a world-class composer on top of his game.

Why did I compare Siamese Dream unfavorably? I think Siamese Dream is a sort of “early Zeitgeist” - it’s simpler in general (i.e. the song structures, the fact that “Soma” is only three chords + a middle 8 riff). Sure, some songs like “Geek USA” are masterpieces, but Zeitgeist shows a similar (if more subtly expressed) ability to take themes and live with them, to really develop them. Most of the songs on the album border on being through-composed. Another song that strikes me as a characteristic “early work” - “Silverfuck”. Sure, it’s long, but it’s repetitive and it takes a long time getting there. It’s a bit reliant on gimmicks like the spoken-word introduction or the reverse echo effect to hold one’s interest. Something “poppy” on Zeitgeist like “That’s the Way” achieves just as many breakthrough moments in far less time - i.e. it is the work of a more mature writer (not a “tired old man”!)

The songs on Gish are very knotty and take alot of strange turns, but I’m just not sold that the raw material of the harmonies, riffs, melody lines (and texture ideas) are as compelling as what is on Zeitgeist.
I think this warrants a SD Vs Zeitgeist poll eh?

I feel like Oceania is "objectively" a better album with better production and more earnest songs, but I'd prefer to listen to Zeitgeist. I don't know why. I guess it just feels like it's at least got an edge and is less boring.

Maybe it's also got to do with what my general perceptions of the band were at the times of release.

With Z, it was like, "okay, this isn't as good as the old stuff, but they literally just got back together and are finding their footing. This is promising." That attitude continued with singles like "SuperChrist" and even "G.L.O.W."

But then years went by, and with somewhere along the way of anticipating each Teargarden track with bated breath, I came to the realization that Corgan isn't getting his groove back, and his creativity is spent.

Oceania was miles better than the shit of Teargarden, but it wasn't good enough to get me excited about a band that had been underwhelming and disappointing for the past decade. Being "not shit" is a low bar to clear, and doesn't really cement to your fans that you're supposed to be their favourite band. So, even if it was better than its predecessors, by that time, I just couldn't bring myself to give a shit.

That was the last Pumpkins release I ever purchased or listened to (aside from the Shiny singles). I don't know what Day for Night or Elegies sound like.

At least Corgan could still write actual rawk tunes on Zeitgeist. Nothing on that album sounds as cringeworthy as "BRING DOWN THE SUN/ I'M NOT EVERYONE/ NYEAHA-YA-HA-YA-HA-YA-HA-EH"

The songs just sound anemic because of the production and vocals, but Corgan still had a fire in his belly. His recent "heavy" shit sounds so dadrock. His only tolerable songs these days are the more laid-back ones.

Zeitgeist... though Superchrist should have been on the album and opened the whole thing.

Oceania is pretty boring, I can never make it pass the first couple of songs without wanting to drastically skip tracks.

Melting Sun sounds like a late 90s generic third wave alt/grunge band

Zeitgeist silver version is the best SP2 album by a long shot

a pretty good cap-off to the relatively open-ended Adore/Machina era, if i'm being truly frank!
